My lad wants a moped - ok I though - set him up, £500 should get him a starter one. Helmet, gloves, jacket etc, couple of hundred maybe ... all set to go.

Ooo, insurance. Best get him a quote. TPF&T - best I can get is over £550! had no idea it was that much! I paid £40 fully comp for mine. 1978 I'll grant you but come one!

That's more than the bike is worth! His comp was over £1000! OK then, let's get a quote just for interest: I'll be tha main rider (passed test in 1980) and he can be a named rider. No difference! Me on me own? £77. hehe

Granted that I just googled 'moped insurance' and went with the first couple and so haven't tried many - but anyone any ideas on where I could get it at a 'reasonable' price?

Or are the above reasonable? I got a quote on a £5k Kwacker ZX-10 comprehensive for myself and it was the same price(ish) - £650 ...

I was insured for my moped with Norwich Union via a broker called A Quote. My first year's premium (aged 16) was £330 fully comp.

Try Rampdale and Lexham. These have seemed good for me so far. What is the bike?

It's a Peugeot Speedfight hairdryer thing - 49cc ...

I have found some for £140, this is TPF&T but with a £500 excess which seems ridiculous.

Third party only is £229 ... but no excess. But no theft cover either. But if we get theft cover, have to pay the £500 excess (what the bike is worth) in any event so what's the point?

May as well get the TPF&T and just don't claim if it gets nicked ...

Still undecided about the whole thing. Never had a car or bike with no theft cover.

Would feel very uneasy about leaving £500-worth of moped on the street unless the wheels were encased in concrete.

Any views?

Well, considering the number of chavs on "scroters" round my manor, and the way they ride, I wouldn't insure them for £10k.

Not fair to your son, of course, that he has to pay a lot. But come on not nexactly a good risk is it?

No it's not a good risk - I've seen the way these muppets ride ...

I was the same at 16 - til I hit the back of the car in front of me one morning. That slowed me down somewhat on the daily commute to the station.

Even after he's done the CBT, there's no way I'm letting him out on his own til I've followed him on the road and seen what he does, where he looks, what he watches for, etc.

I follow these CBTers on the road quite often as there is a course run nearby, som of them are frightening ... wobbling about, unsure of where to be on a junction, not indicating at all, never look round, just aren't aware of thier surroudings which you have to be on a bike, it's the best thing you can do for your own safety.

And he ain't havng a bleedin' sports exhaust either :hehe

just trouble

Is the insurance all sorted now. I have got my CBT tomorrow and I have just tried Carol Nash. £240 Third Party only but it does include the legal cover, breakdown cover and 90 days abroad which is good. TPFT is just under £400 with £500 excess and the bike is only worth £700 - £800. Thought it could be useful to anyone else struggling to find good insurance.

Its annoying but I can see why it is so high with all the people who ride like tcensoreds. Thats one of the reasons I bought a bike that looks like a bike (Not Step through) but is still a 50cc auto and easy to learn on. Hopefully people wont pull out on me etc.
