Going to Le Mans again this year, and would like to have a good telephoto to take some snaps of the cars going round the track.

It doesn't need to be the most amazing thing, actually anything will do. But would like to know what the benefit of the different focal lengths are? IE 70-200 70-300 100-300, do any have a benefit or are they just for different occasions?

Don't want to spend over £150, so really just looking for a budget Lens.

Thanks very much.

Find a Canon 100-300 but make sure it's the USM version.

Look up the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG MACRO.

Best about for the budget.

Another vote for the Sigma! Autofocus will be noiser and a bit slower than the canon USM lens but in theory you get better optics.

Make sure you get the APO version though!! The image quality of the APO is way ahead of the non APO version. i.e Better Glass....lol. Apochromatic i think the full name is!

Remember that on the 350D you will be multiplying the lens length by 1.6x unless it's a digital-specific lens, so 100-300 becomes 160-480.

I've recently been borrowing a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 HSM from a mate and using it on my 350D - results here:

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=109&t=377413&p=1

It's much more expensive than your budget as it's f/2.8 and HSM, but it gives you an idea of the kind of zoom a 200mm will give for things like motorsport. Personally, I would have liked an extra 100mm but the f/2.8 is really useful for low-light shooting and good DOF - and the 100-300 f/2.8 is mega bucks.

??

Digital specific lenses have the 1.6x effect too..............(I think)

The sensor size is the factor which decides the image magnification, not the lens in use.

I have a 400D with an APS-C sized sensor which multiplies any lens by 1.6x, then my 1D MK 1 has an APS-H sized sensor which is 1.3x magnification, and finally my 1DS II has a full frame 35mm sensor so no magnification at all!

I do apologise, you're absolutely right of course.

I bought this on Saturday. It seems to get better reviews than the Canon equivalent in the magazines.

Obvioulsy I haven't received it yet but the seller has been very good so far, kept me informed, and the lens was shipped today. He has 100% +ve feedback as well. Worth a look.

I got an old Vivitar Series one s/h for about half your budget. It's a 100-400, comes with a small lens hood and a Canon rip off white finish.

Found LOTS of criticism of this lens on the American forums, but digging out an old AP review (from AP website) - was rated as good optics when tested. I like it a lot - it's obviously got more reach than my EF 75-300 and the sharpness is significantly better, even when at 400...

Only thing is speed drops to F5.6-6.3, easily compensated with a bit of higher ISO action... no probs with AF though on a 350D

Another vote for Canon 100-300 USM. Faster AF and full-time manual focus are really worth it. Sigma 70-300 is a nice lens but AF is slow and noisy in comparison.

Purchased the sigma yesterday, not had a chance to try it out in anger yet, but it seems to cope admirably with what I've tried so far...

I'm selling my Canon EF 75-300 4-5.6 MkIII as I've upgraded to a Sigma 70-200 2.8, let me know if you're interested.
