Budget of about £40 but cheaper is always better!

Looking for strength and reliability rather than low weight, so lots of bearings and possibly steel cups. Any suggestions? This 'Isis' business is all new to me!

Has anyone had any experience of ISIS bottom brackets? Are they really as unreliable as everyone says?

I haven't had any more problems with ISIS than I used to get, I did have one faulty FSA platinum (can't recall which model) but they sent a new one out no questions asked and that one has been fine for the last 2/3 years. A lot of the creaking problems seem to come down to the bolts not being loctite'd which in my opinion is upto the user. You'll be lucky to get much choice with cromoly cups but if you want strength at the expense of wieght then it may be worth fitting a downhill style item even if you don't need it.

Truvativ Gigapipe is your best bet for a tough Isis BB.

Still got Isis cranks on one of my bikes - there are issues, but no more so than Tapered. They just wear out rather than snapping.

Can I suggest that you consider a LX Hollowtech II chainset?

You'll find it hopefully for cheaper than the £75 Chain Reaction want, perhaps on Ebay...

I have a spare set just in case.

The reason why I suggest this? You get a set of the very good external BB cup bearings, and some great cranks.

Worth a consideration, as they are very good value for money...

Good find!

THe Hollowtech 2 is great kit, Got Saints on the 'rig' already.

In fact, the fact you've found them for 58 pounds, means I may well be purchasing tonight.

Need some new kit, not had a fix in, ooh, at least a week.

Just bought a set for the commuter bike - been on the lookout for a cheap set to replace the ancient and worn-out STX/RC that's on there and £58 will do nicely!

Wish you hadn't bought the LX thing up now, its made the Middleburns I was looking at seem rather expensive! Is there not a decent external bearing bottom bracket that will work with all cranks?

Fraid not.

Although Shimano and Raceface cups are interchangeable.

With the X types stuff its not so much a BB unit anymore - the system works just like a headset on its side.

The Axle is bonded to one crank arm, (like fork steerer/crown), the cups screw into the BB shell (like the headset cups press into the Headtube) then the other arm slides on and nips up (just like the stem onto the steerer). Ther bearings are nipped up by way of the crank bolt, (just like the Starnut/headlock). Bear in mind that again, jsut like the star nut, the crank end bolt doesn't do anything to hold the cranks on. Once its used to tension everything up, it doesn't really have to be there.

They are indeed, the nuts.

I seriously suggest that you consider a set of XTR if you want bling, and XT if you simply want bloody cracking good value cranks. Very lightweight, and strong, and you get the whole caboodle for under £90.

Balls,

Missed out on this little beauty: Wiggle are doing the same LX chainset for £50 if you go for the OEM verison (i.e. no Shimano box to throw away)

Bargain.
