I've just treated myself to the EVGA 8800GTS 320 OverClocked. I'm upgrading
from an Ati X800XL running on an Asus A8N-E and AMD 4200+ Dual Core.

My new card should arrive on Friday.

Anyone else done this upgrade and can tell me what kind of performance
increase I may see ?

Bloody awesome.

I have one, and I can run EVERYTHING on absolutely full whack. Its obviously in hand with the rest of my spec, but the card is fapping powerful, and I can't wait to see what DX10 games are like.

Be careful to ensure that your power supply can handle it though, I melted the one that I had and that was a 500Watt. I've now a decent 650Watt PSU and its fine.

I have the GTX version (factory overclocked to 600mhz), and I got nearly 13000 marks in 3d mark 06, my GF 7950GX (paired with an AM2 4600 - now installed in a media case pc) only ever managed about 7000 points! (Although I think the new Quad core Extreme CPU helps a little. hehe

I loaded my games on the PC last night, and this is the first time the games settings automatically max out everything!

One thing to be careful of, the new gfx cards are really dependent on how powerful your CPU is - i.e. the rate it can feed the gfx card with data. They are so fast, that the CPU can now be a bottleneck! you should be ok with an X2 4200+ though.

I have read a couple of PC mag articles about the 8800 GTS and GTX, and it seems that in the real world of gaming, there are no real discernable differences in performance - your games will look great and fly at the same time! bounce

Thanks Chris. I went for the GTS 320 because it seemed to be a waste going for the 640mb version or the GTX as I only game at 1280x1024.

I've got two 6600GT's and want to upgrade soon because TDU is hanging a bit.

What do you think i should plump for? (under £100 because cars are sucking me dry of cash ).

Excellent

I have just installed Silent Hunter 4 to play on the 50" plasma, and it looks stunning! But I need a crash course into how to actually play the game! lol

Chris. SH4 was one of the reasons I upgraded. I'm running it at 1280x1024 with 16xAA and 16xAF and everything maxed. It's silky smooth !

heh - this thread has just made me buy a new card + machine.

Machine: Dell Outlet Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 for £450+vat

Card: 8800GTS

I could have gone bleeding edge, but it's the law of diminishing returns for me.

Anyone know how games are going to run in my native 1920x1200 ? Anyone else with such a LCD resolution ?

Hi GT

Nice one ! Sorry you've had to spend the cash though ... hehe

I'm guessing you've gone for the 640mb card as you will be running at such a high res ?

For reviews and benchmarks have a look at these sites :

www.sharkyextreme.com
www.tomshardware.com
www.anandtech.com

They will give you an idea on how well your card will perform with different games.

go to widescreengamingforum mate, all answers there bit more complicated than just running at native res, the could be widescreen, zoomed, stretched (hor + or vert -) etc.
