I need to get a new battery for my 4.2. The current Bosch one that is fitted has a cranking rating of 420A. Is this sufficient, as the one fitted to my Volvo has a rating of 600A, and I would of thought that a 4.2 V8 would take more effort to crank than a 2.5 5cyl.

Anybody know what the correct rating is ?

The biggest one you can possibly fit !

I know that doesn't answer your question directly but that would be my advice.

More usefully, there's a thread here

I've just bought a new battery for mine, nothing was listed for a Cerb, so it was a case of measuring the old one and hunting around the Motor factors with a Tape measure and finding one the right size, with the terminals in the correct position. I'm in the middle of fitting it now (I'm just having a coffee break), so I'll let you now if I picked the right one in about an hours time (Then again it is a Cerbera so it will probably be in 2 hours time)

No it was the wrong one, just 15mm too long so the engine cover thing wouldn't fit over it. I've since taken it back, and been through their whole stock looking for one that would fit, but no luck, so drove over to Halfords, and went to the parts counter....

Halfords " Can I help you Sir"
Me: "I'm after a battery for my car, you wont have it listed but....."
Halfords (butting in and flexing his fingers, poised ready over the keyboard) "What make is it?"
Me: "It's a TVR, but I doubt if....."
Halfords "A what?"
Me: "a TVR"
Halfords " How do you spell that Sir?"
Me: " TVR"
Hafords "No the make sir, not the Model"
Me: "TVR"
Halfords (In a sarcastic 'Oh we've got an awkward tw@t here who doesn't know the difference between make and model' tone of voice' "OK sir, what model is it then?"
Me: "Cerbera"
Halfords "Ah a Subaru, now were getting somewhere - and what model Subaru is it Sir"

At which point I walked away and just started to measure up the ones on display to see if any were the right size and they weren't, before driving to Kwikfit, at least all the lads in there were helpful and knew what a TVR was, they checked through loads of books, rang up there supplier who apparently knew all about TVR's, and said he could get one to me in an hour. Waited an hour, watching Nissan Micras having exhausts fitted, and people in Fiestas complaining about tyres costing £19.99 each. Eventually the battery arrived, but guess what? Wrong one, positive and negative terminals round the wrong way!! Guys at kwikfit were as dead apologetic, and it wasnt there fault really, but they directed me to another local battery specialist, but same story, nothing listed, and nothing in stock that would fit, so back to searching.

12 volt and as big a cold cranking current that will fit in the battery tray is my normal policy on batteries rolleyes. I think a Type 072 is standard though.

Not quite as simple as that Harry - never is with TVR is it. For example a type 072 Varta has protruding lugs not the recessed ones.
I have however, just taken the risk of ordering one online for £50.00, delivered fully charged to my door. Sounds too good to be true doesn't it - but I like taking risks - however the guy seemed to know what he was talking about, knew which way round the lugs were meant to be etc etc - so I will keep you all posted, will it be a or a on Thursday when it arrives..

The HAlfords 072 fits and seems to last well (and the guarantee gives you peace of mind).

Sorry Harry, but you've got me at the wrong end of a day spent trudging around battery shops asking for a type 072 !! "What sort of 072 sir?" You may as well tell me to go and and get a 12v battery, because that's what yours is, and it fits. !!

Maybe you are just lucky and I'm unlucky in that Halfords in Gloucester is staffed by a bunch of inbred idiots who cant get a job any where else because they are so friggin thick, but I rang them up and asked if they stocked a type 072 battery, they had never heard of it so suggested I come in and speak to them, (for what happened see above)

as an example here is a type 072 from Varta

www.tayna.co.uk/item/1000/0/072-Numax-Car-Battery-12V-70AH-page1.html - wrong one !

So please no more suggestins like "Get an 072" - When I get the right battery I will post on here all the details so that the next person who needs a battery knows which one to get.

Bl**dy Hell K1Cerb - out of curiosity I clicked on your profile, then went to your Website - Unfortunately I have my PC plumbed into my Hi-fi system which had been left at about 75% volume - well I clicked on the Cerb link, and ..................f**k !!, I've just come down from the ceiling, my heart rate is just getting back to normal, and I think all the neighbours have finally stopped swearing at me and are slowly going back to bed laugh

Your not alone, whenever I buy a car I always like to give it a new battery, but easier said
than done with a Cerb. To date I've tried 3 that should "definitely fit sir" and I'm still on the old battery that was on the car when I got her. Which,(irritatingly enough jensenaweeping)happens to have 072 on it.

The Halfords type 072 battery does fit and many many people here have bought and fitted one. If you are getting the run around then ask APM or a dealer etc to get you one?

Halfords 072 DEFINITELY fits, there are two types one is the standard version with a 3 year warrenty the other a calcium version with 4 years.

Sounds like your branch of Halfords stocks different batteries to the others, either that or Halfords have change their range.

After reading all of the comical comments about un-knowledgeable Halfords staff (a while ago), I decided to remove my battery and take it with me. Fortunately they had both types of 072 in stock on the shelf, but I still had a look around all of the others to see if there was one with similar dimensions but a higher Ampage rating. There were a couple with a higher rating and the same if not smaller dimensions, but the lugs were the opposite way around, so no good.

In the end I just went for another 072 with 3 year warrenty(3rd one from Halfords over the years).

Just my 2pence worth,

Jules.
