1999, 1600 focus, remote locking / unlocking has stopped working. The key fob seems to be transmitting as I can hear it by tuning a radio receiver to the appropriate frequency. Changed the battery anyway but still no go.

Is there a way of re-synchronising the key to the car ? seem to remember something like turning the ignition on and pressing the unlock button 10 times but that could have been a different car. Or is there any other common problem that stops the receiver in the car working, central locking still seams to operate as both doors open when the key is used manually.

Yes it can be re-programmed to the car (you'll need to do all of your keys at the same time).

The fact that both doors don't would suggest the central locking module has just 'dropped' the code from the key........annoying but it happens! If it was just one door that wouldn't lock/unlock then that's the door lock solenoid gone!

I can't remember the exact process of doing it but it CAN be done.

HOWEVER........there is a central locking fuse behind the fusebox (on the back of it I think) which is behind the glovebox..........might be worth checking that one to see if it's dead as this could/would cause the problem you're having

Thanks for that Dave
I think the fuse is OK as manually opening one side opens the other. As you say it looks as if the box in the car and the key have stopped talking to each other. I have found another thread for a newer Ford that involves turning the ignition on and off three times and, operating the door light switch three times and pressing the lock button on the key. Haven’t tried that yet but suspect this older car will be different.
