Mercedes S600
Robert Farago gets behind the wheel of the monstrous V12 S600

You're looking at this the wrong way DeR.
Think along the lines of complimenting the porker rather than beating it. Remember there is absolutely no way these uberbarges will beat the pork on the twisties. I hope MB sell lots of them so that they are cheap in a couple of years time with 50k miles on the clock (did you know that over 50% of new s-classes sold in the UK today are the diesel model?).
DAZ
PS - You could always be a numpty and refuse to move over.

Fatboy said: The CL600 has 500 bhp (it's the maybach engine - twin turbo 6 litre V12), as does the SL600 and the S600.
Yes and the next generation CL600 already previewed in the press has 612bhp. Unfortunately for the new buyers out there they've upped the new price to £120k+.
DAZ
Edited to say or is it the new CL65AMG with the 612bhp I've read about. Not sure but there is a 612bhp engine online for the S and CL class big mercs.

If the build is lower than rivals it becomes pointless. Btw, I was in a new E-class taxi the other week and the quality was like a polo. Not bad, but not what you expect in a luxury car. Merc's been on the slide since it starting shifting those little shopping trolleys. A one off flagship doesn't redress the balance either.
RS6 has it beaten on every criteria. Go buy one.

Daz - thought you might like to know that I was toasted yesterday by an S55 AMG - surely the uberist of uber saloons?
Although it activated a serious 'bling' alert on the blingometer, I couldna help resist admiring it's impossible explosion forth.
Made me wonder how even an M5 woulda coped..?

Interestingly DeR there are two types of engines put in the S55 mercs.
There is the original 350bhp version that IMHO was not worth the premium over the 306bhp S500 at the time.
Then there is the current supercharged version with 490ish BHP, definitely worth the premium.
Although what about the new supercharged E55 with 490bhp. I think with a manual porker for playtime one may as well forget the manual M5 and pick up one of these auto missile barges as a family wagon workhorse.

Mein Kaiser;
Tis indeed a quandry amongst quandries especially when you consider, as has been reported before, that a 'well stirred' M5 could just about keep pace with the latest killers from the keepers of the four rings and the tristars...
The M5 just refuses to lie down and die and at the end of the day, when I bend over for the final rogering c/o my risible Lexian trade, there will still be a £25-£30k premium for the slushtastics as opposed to the Merry Munchen...which in 6 months will be what, 7 or 8p each?
Much car for little wonga.

As has been mentioned, as soon as you get onto the twisties it has no chance against a "normal" car. After all, most of us on this site have sports cars so why be bothered by this monster?.
I raced one a while back and left him on the twisties, he stayed with me on the straights and I was impressed with the power of the beast!
I have 300hp, so the power to weight is about the same, although he has oodles of torque to play with.

Good point, Adster von Hoogenhimmel;
You remind me of the time when, as custodian of a lowly 120 horespowered, boggo Elsie Mk1, I well and truly whipped the tail end of something with AMG written on the back of it, across some local blacktop more twisty than the tongue of the wormster with the same name.
It was a defining momnet of horses for courses but good God, imagine what damage something ultralisetic like a Joustian GTO might do, even on a more conventional A-route?
Rejoice, therefore, in the radiant splendour of the Frogeye.

Would agree with some of the comments above, Merc are changing.
There cars have become so much more stylish, they are producing cracking cars like the SL55 and their engines are still spot on.
But build quality does not seem as good. Compare the current C-class with the old one.
The old one was shaped like a brick, the interior was chunky, the switch gear solid and it had real feeling of beeing bomb prof.
The new one looks nice but looks a bit plastic, the shiny wood looks crap, and the solidity has gone.
Come on merc, sort it out!
