quite interesting this, and a tad dangerous I think.............

The A63 into Hull has had for quite a while roadworks due to a big re-vamp at north ferriby. It was a 50 due to traffic lights on the Dual carriageway, then a VERY aggressively enforced 40 during the roadworks which a normal motorway junction was created along with roundabouts.

Well, the roadworks have now gone and the road is NSL - 70MPH straight through. The trouble is, people are braking down to bellow 40 where they know the 40 limit to start, even though it doesn't any more. I've done it myself the first time, only to be confused wondering where the 40 repeaters and the tallivan was.

I now have the cruise at about 75, but almost a*se ended someone who slammed on infront of me. And it's happening every day now (the slamming on, not the near accident)

There's going to be quite a few smashes I reckon, if there hasn't been already.

Sorry, I don't follow. Are you saying that by slowing down, people are causing danger? Don't you know that every 1mph reduction in speed results in a 5% reduction in accidents? Therefore those who are slowing from 70mph to 40mph are only 15% as likely to have a crash as child-murderers like you who insist on doing 70mph. Never mind what the speed limit is in this case, 70mph is clearly far too fast at any time.

Excessive speed (and maybe inappropriate speed as well, but I'm not too sure and I don't really care) causes 100% of accidents and then some. It's so obvious, and road safety is so simple: why can't people just slow down?

so by that very logic it's actually better to drive any speed you like then slow down by 20MPH therefore becoming 100% safe, as each 1MPH reduction gives you 5% off the danger level.

I'll get me coat......................

Can I suggest you create an extra large gap around your car at that point of the road and ease off?

I would hope so as if the *is* a 5% drop in accidents/deaths and the OP were to drop speed by 30mph then not only would there never be a death on the roads, but there would also be an increase in life for the additional 50% saving presumably somewhere else in the world!

Thats chaos theory in action for you!

And what happens when everyone does the same? A: panic braking by drivers further downstream.

Perhaps what Bryan is trying to say is that a prior indication of the cessation of the lowered limit would be in order.

If everyone did the same, the traffic flow would be much safer and smoother if someone stuffed up. Unfortunately everyone won't.

It goes without saying that people should leave enough gap in case the driver in front performs an emergency manoeuvre - but why an "extra large" gap?

You've not really grasped the concepts of compression and flow have you, let alone the point I was trying to make - which you conveniently didn't quote!

Perhaps what Bryan is trying to say is that a prior indication of the cessation of the lowered limit would be in order.

Surely if this is the case the population will start to increase exponentially, thereby leading to an increase CO2 production followed by global warming and an almost certain grim death for us all?

Look, this is all very amusing but getting back to the original question chaps.

What bryan seems to be suggesting is a phenomenon I recognise and results from people using out of date local knowledge inappropriately and in direct contravention of what their eyes would tell them if they only looked.

I can comment on two local instances. Please at this point set aside all comments on inappropriate lowering of limits as that is a separate discussion.

1)
A 40 limit road was reduced to 30 and signed. Over one year later a load of people are pinged and complain vehemently because they drive along this road everyday and the limit has always been 40.
shout No it hasn't its been 30 for the last 15-18 months, you just haven't looked!

2) An A-class dual has, like so many others, suffered the creeping 50 reductions over a period of time. banghead Sorry let that slip out.

At the point where the 50 limit used to end and the NSL start, some 2/3 years later, a staggering number of drivers having strictly obeyed the 50 limit through what has always been an aggressively scammed section then get to the EXACT point where the limit used to change and then hoof it. It is just a matter of time before they start pinging on the next section.

Now there is no reason from road layout etc why so many of these people would say at this point in the road, Oh stuff this, the limit is not appropriate I'm going to ignore it. It seems to me they genuinely still think the limit changes back to NSL.
