After a minor collision last week my front NS wing was dented and then futher dented that evening by myself and friends to such an extent the door was rubbing on it, necessitating it's removal. I have since been driving around with the pannel missing. I am collecting a new wing from a breakers yard tomorrow but have to drive the car about 100 miles there and the same back as well as during the time it takes me to fit it. I was pulled over yesterday and told it was illegal due to a crumple zone being removed but i didn't not think it was as the front wheel is still covered by the inner wing and the bumper extends as normal so the wheel doesnt exceed the bodywork line but just looks a little dodgy?

I am posting just to see if it is illegal and to see if there will be any problem if i get pulled on the way to the scrappy tomorrow.

It would fail an mot for it so expect the police to take an extremely dim view of it.

Would it though? A wing isn't generally structural. If the wheel's covered and the lightin's not affected, I don't see that it'd be technically unsafe or illegal really.

Normally it would be illegal if there are any sharp edges or anywhere that a pedestrian could get hurt if they were run over by you or came into contact with your car.Another point is if your side indicator was on the wing and is now missing then that alone would make it illegal. My opinion would be that without a wing there must be an edge somewhere ie the edge of the door that a pedestrian could hit say with their head which would cause an injury. Therefore the car would be unroadworthy and illegal to use on the road.It is hard to answer though without seeing the car.

Just for clarification the indicator is there and hanging from the wire,

what would the penalty be if i were to be caught anyway?

If any sharp or pretruding edges then its gonna be 3 points and 60 notes (vehicle in dangerous condition)

Or just 30 quid for the light (fitting / conforming / maintaining)

Can you not get the part sent to you by post?

3 points, are you serious, even if i am just going to collect the part to fix it. I would get it delivered but they dont do delivery and cant really get any more point because i already have three and will have my liscence taken away if i get more.

scratchchinWould it be illegal if i stuck on the old damaged wing with duct tape for the journey and poked the light through

Yep serious.

Is there no scrappy nearer to you who can source the part as 100 miles is a long treck?!?

I guess it would be down to is it reasonable to drive that far to be repaired and as you are just picking up the part and returning home with it i would say it is not reasonable distance to be repaired.

You have also been driving around like it. So in my view if i saw you on monday, then again on friday with the same damage then id be sending you to court for the offence.

It's up to you if you want to run the risk. You may get away with it, and may not.

Put the old wing back on and Hit it with a hammer until it does not rub. Not got a hammer ? Try Focus DIY or B&Q ! Whilst at the DIY shop get some Ducktape Duct Tape and use it liberally.

Take the other wing off and claim it's an experimental Baja Bug.
If you remove all the indicators, isn't that legal?

this is a wind-up surely? You are a student, have had your licence for less than 2 years, have 3 points and you are planning to drive a car in a dangerous condition, without the outer-wing, indicator hanging on a wire. Even if it were not technically in a dangerous condition, it will draw plod to you like a very very very strong plod-magnet and they may just not be impressed with the fact that you thought it was ok because you were just on your way to pick up the new wing to make it safe again!

Get the bus.

I have tried speaking to them about posting but this is not possible. As this place is a bit out of the way in terms of location and actual distance there is no other option than me driving to collect it. I would ask one of my parents to go with me but they are working and i am not insured on any other car, its a real catch 22.

The thing is that i was pulled over the other day with it and just let on my way after explaining the circumstances

Is this the same as having coloured sidelights then? £30 non endorsable?

Yep.

Dangerous condition is a different matter though.

No it is definately a legal requirement to have indicators and your car will be unroadworthy without them.

As von has said the dangerous condition is a whole different matter to the issue of an indicator.A car is designed with pedestrian impact in mind,as such the wing is designed to protect an impact with a pedestrian to a certain extent and its removal could very easily make the car be classed as in a dangerous condition.

I cant see the problem with duct taping over, jigging the panel in place and making sure the indicator is working a visible. If pulled argue that the car is mechanically sound, emphasise you have been maticiolous in your ascertainment that all parts are secured and inform them that the panel has never actually came off, just that it has been damaged and you have effected a temporary repair in the interests of safety while you get the new part. Say your mate a mechanic checked the lights in all. If you are pulled they would have to be complete bitches to do you remember, There is no offence of having a dent in your wing. Just ensure that the wing is fixed well in place, perhaps try silicone, depending on area.

Worst comes to worst, you end up in court but are they really going to take you to court for having a dent on your wing if all the mechanical parts are operational?
