Lagging for induction system

Hello all,

After my recent repositioning of the radiator and rerouting of the intake ducting, the time has come to put in to practice the second part of my plan. This will involve lagging the 3” diameter aluminium inlet pipe to prevent the hot exhaust heating the air.

Does anyone know of a suitable lagging material, obviously non-flammable, preferably not too scruffy looking and easy to fabricate. Oh, and if it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, so much the better.

Hi Z

Arco do an aluminium foil backed fibreglass matting on a roll, its a heat reflective matting which is very flexible and might suit your purpose. Its available in a metre wide roll and is sold by the metre - around £10 per metre if I remember.

how much do you need ? I still have some left over from a previous job.

That looks like it would do, is it self adhesive. In reality I probably need much less than a metre for the job.

I don't know how much it would cost to post such a thing, but if it was viable at the price, I'd be happy to take some off your hands.

If you're going to that trouble to keep the induction air cool you will also need an insulator beneath your trumpet base.

I don't think I will mess about with the trumpet base, not unless I have to remove it anyway. Although I do have a cam and follower change coming up.

The exhaust manifold temperature is likely to be several hundred, degrees hotter than the block ever is anyway. You can place you finger on the block with the engine running, you would probably loose the end of it on the manifold.

Can you really? Most of the block will be around 80-100C which is far too hot to touch.

Well you can give it a prod with your finger with out the skin coming off, much like picking up a baked tatty out of the oven. I should think that trying the same on the manifold would produce a nasty smell of burning flesh.

Anyway, the point I was making is that there is a vast ca. 500-1000 deg difference between the manifold and the block, and that the difference warrents lagging of the induction tube which is in close proximity to the exhaust manifold. Further, that this is a valid action irrespective of insulating the trumpet base, w.r.t the difference in temperature and ease of fitment.
