Driving home today I stopped at a set of lights, as I did so I noticed a Trafpol pull in behind me from across the road.

Prudently adhering to the posted limits (as always) I was follwed for about a mile and a half before he put his blues on!

I pulled over turned the ignition off and undid ny belt. He took about a minute to exit his car (old shape 5 series) and walked up to the mine.

'Good afernoon sir, is this your car'?

Yes Officer

Overheard something faint on his radio

Sorry sir but my car has ANPR and it suggests that this vehicle is stolen, but I think we may have got 1 digit wrong!! Can I have your name

Name volunteered

Apologies sir but as this is a high value vehicle and the system said it was stolen, apologies again.

TBH he was extremely polite and looked a trifle embarassed, but its the first time I've been stopped for about 6 years, so was worrying for a second(even though I'd done nothing wrong)

if he was polite, i don't really see a problem... ANPR saves me so much bother... instead of getting pulled all the time, i get tailed for half a mile occationally...

For a pennies worth, I think he was polite because you gave him no reason to act in any other way.

I would agree both times ive been pulled for speeding (95 in a 60 and 35 in a 30) i was polit e courteous and had that look as if to say id made a mess in my pants, i got away with a stern talking to both times.

I got stopped as my car was not showing on the Insurance database that the ANPR uses and after a chat to the officer who was both profesional and polite he said 'I could impound your car but I don't belive that you do not have insurance so I'll give you a producer instead'

I took my documents to the station the next day and sorted it out, then got on to my insurance company who had put '00' instead of 'oo' on my reg in to the database...

Not impressed!

I have had this happen to me, from the other side....
It could be that they typed the reg into the 'puter wrong (easy to do in a moving car!) and in my experience, when you get the reg wrong the result that comes back will ALWAYS be a stolen car, or linked to a murder, or be known for trafficking WMD's to Iraq or something! Or simply that their ANPR read theplate wrong as can also happen.

I've stopped motorists and spent 10 minutes "investigating" before realising the mistake to my shame. When all is cleared up a simple apology, explanation and "at least you know all your documents are in order now" usually suffices.

ANPR misread our cars digits on a specs system, had been manually corrected (with a pen note!) obviously they could'nt trace the misread so double checked the image record.

This came about as we asked to see the evidence to identify who was driving, it was nightime shot of a pair of fuzzy headlights & plate, that was it
