Same question really.

Took a colleague's Boxster S for a 30 second spin around the car park yesterday, and he is now accusing me of burning out his clutch. The car is booked into a garage tomorrow.

Admitidly revved it a bit, but nothing worse than I do in my Impreza occasionally. Can the Boxster clutch give up so easily and what sort of cost are we looking at? Any info gratefully received.

By repute they are not the strongest point of the car. I have never had any clutch troubles on my last two - but I didn't get as far as 20,000 miles on the last one so...

How old was the 'S'? (Miles...)

Driven managed to knacker two Boxsters' clutches during program making (although heavy right feet and total lack of mechanical sympathy did get the blame in the end).

Cheers Don. It is a W reg and has done about 15,000 miles. If they are known to be weak it looks like it was an expensive 30 second spin. Any idea what I am looking at cost wise?

Unfortunate incident, but surely you would only have to come up with a good will payment on a 15,000 mile clutch rather than pay the whole cost?

If you are happy to pay for the whole thing,,let me book my car in at AFN and then please feel free to borrow it and they will sort out any imperfections.

Might give you an idea. Inflate that somewhat for OPC prices and, of course, add labour. Depending on where you are a specialist may offer a better deal. Northway Porsche in reading and JZ Machtech have excellent reputations in the South...

Only 15,000 miles seems very low. As Don stated, the Boxster clutch isn't the strongest point of the car - it's not ideal for traffic light drag races for example! My original Box did 36K miles on the original clutch (the first owner only did 2200 miles in a year - I bought the car at a year old and had it for a further 2.5 years) and was still ok when I sold it. My current Box S is 3 years old with 40K miles and the clutch is still OK.

I would be questioning whether you really had burnt the clutch out on your brief spin. Might be worth checking out the US Porsche Pete's Boxster Board as there have been a number of posts on failed clutches although I think that this was on the very early cars (certainly pre-99)

Your colleague is a tight fisted cretin, tell him to pay his own maintainence bills. The clutch would have worn out over time. He is trying to take you for a mug.

With mates like that...

Tell him to buy himself a VW Polo if he expects his clutch to last a few hundred thousand miles and never have to repair anything.

Does he want you to get it valeted too as your arse dented his seat leather.

Eeerily quiet today,,,I thought we would have had at least one of the TVR boys responding to even the slightest aroma of Boxstaaa clutch in the air.

Except it got so predictable and boring even the TVR boys got tired of it...who needs the old

TVR Tamora crowd: "Your clutches break. Nyah nyah."

Porsche Crowd: "Yah boo sucks. Your cars are made of plastic or was that papier mache. Nyah nyah."

According to JZ Machtech's website (who I highly recommend), a clutch for a Boxster S is listed as £480 +vat

I have a 2.5 boxster, had my first clutch change at 140.000 km just before the warranty period expired, clutch was still ok. Have now 270.000 km and clutch is still going strong.
PS my right foot is linked to my wallet, speedingtickets cost a fortune in Belgium.
So it all depends onyour right foot mate!!!!

Thanks for all your contributions. Turned out to be a false alarm in the end, the garage told him the clutch was fine, he was just being melodramatic.

Well thank goodness for that. And, frankly, I'd think twice about ever driving one of his cars again. Daz has a point - clutches are very, very rarely worn out in one short drive....
