My oil level always seems to show 1 bar off full.

My car had a 48k service recently and I presume they would have filled the car correctly. I did not check at the time but 2 weeks later I did and the level was at 1 bar below full.

I then had an OPC check done and I mentioned it to the mechanic who said it was not a problem but he would fill it up anyway. After he filled it, it was on full. But a week later it had again dropped to 1 bar below full. And now it just sits there at that level.

What gives?

One bar off full is perfect, they use quite a lot of oil if you use the 0-40 so going down a bar pretty quickly is normal.

That's fine, they eat oil anyway!

To be honest most optimal level to keep it at is just below half way.

I've also just had a minor service at Colchester OPC on my 996tt and it also came back 1 bar off full. I gather it's more of a problem if you overfill so I imagine they're being cautious. More worrying is a slight oil leak since the service!! Any ideas? Does it have a sump bung -or whatever ??

Hi

it has 2 sump plug washers one on the crankcase and one on the oil tank....oil tank is on the drivers side in front of the wheel area...behind the drivers rear seat.

a yo sai they are probably been cautious so they are not completely filling it up but then again they do eat oil.

The max level is there for a reason. Fill it to the max, then let the engine find its own level. Some may breathe more than others, some may use less etc, aslong as it's between min and max then you should be fine.

Today I noticed it has dropped to half way between the 2 markers.

You guys still think this is normal? I am getting worried weeping

I guess I will just keep an eye on it for now and might see if it goes down to the lowest marker before over reacting and booking it in at an OPC.

Of the top of someone head; what is the volume difference between the max and min markers or for each of the markers?

Stop panicking. The electric oil display is only about a litre (or maybe less) from top to bottom. There is 11 litres in the engine/dry sump/oilcooler/pipes etc.

The car will safely run well below this level - I would only be concerned if the electonic gauge and the dipstick had no level on it.

How many miles have you done since it was showing full?
I keep the level on mine around half way between the markers, which is probably the best place to keep it.
I would say mine has used a litre in the last 750 miles. It will vary on how hard you drive it.

Nice one. Thanks guys.

I would say it has dropped to about half way between the markers in just over 1000 miles. That is without driving it too hard in that time except for the occassional blast.

I guess I had better bring loads of Mobil 1 with me for me Ring trip next month then
