it no excuse but i forgot to pay my car tax. basically i was sent a letter in march stating i must pay the tax, arrears and fine. i went out immediately and purchased a new up to date tax disc. however this has left me short and i cannot pay the 80 pound fine untill monday and the date on the letter states it must be paid by 28th April.

i was wondering if anyone has any knowledge on whether i will recieve a higher fine/ the concequences if i do not pay by the 28th?

I would make contact with them now and let them know the situation and see what they say.Your cutting it a bit fine as you only have till tomorrow to pay.If you dont pay i can see the fine going up just like any other case.

well to let you all know i just phoned up this morning and paid it off no problems!

my pay went through on sat (28th last day) so i called them up but its only ing open mon-fri. thought it if they try saying its late i will say i tried to make payment on the 28th and will just call monday.

called the women gave my details and she was "i see you have paid the car tax which is very good mr... if you will hold a moment i will check your case history"

she comes back takes my card details and says "the payment has cleared case closed"!!

lesson has been learnt though ALWAYS PAY CAR TAX ON TIME as i just wasted 80 buck

How long did it take for the fine to come through after your tax expired?

before anyone says anything i also have a compnay car which i use daily. the car in question is just a weekend car and has not been on the road since november and i should of declared it off the road but because i now want to use it over the summer i just paid the tax and also the arrears.

in answer to the question the tax ran out in 31/12/2006. the letter was dated 03/03/2007. so it took them a couple of months.

Interesting. I am surprised it it not sooner.

This actually seems like quite a reasonable attitude from DVLA in case one forgets to get tax.

yeah it is a reasonable attitude, i am sure many people forget their second cars or are away etc. so its good that a certain amount of time is given before a fine issued. also if the fine is paid in the first couple of weeks its only half at 40 buck.

i wonder how people who are seen on the roads by police are dealt with though? say i was caught driving by the police in that first month would i have just got an 80 buck fine?
