Are you sure? they do actually conform to all the detail as specified by the DVLA, with the exception of the font. There are worse fonts driving around on UK style plates.

Many years ago I had a Fiat Panda approved by a DVLA inspection with a UK registration on French plates, the French font was deemed to be acceptable.

The font is'nt wide enough and you can't have a uk registered car with a "D" euro mark.

why not its a german car could be a german owner

You can't have a UK reg plate with a "D" euro mark on it. Doesn't matter what nationality the owner or the manufacturer are.

I understand what you are saying VH, but IIRC even if it had a 'UK' europlate instead of a 'D' europlate it would still be technically illegal in the UK, it's the logo that is illegal, not whether it is 'D' or 'UK'.

So, if the car had proper normal UK plates on it, and a nationality badge on the rear with a D for Germany, would that be illegal too?

My point is provide evidence why it is not legal. So when I get pulled over I can ask the same question

Reg 16(2) Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001.

there are a few of these going around aberdeen. it may be illegal but how often would the BiB stop you?

i dont really expect it would be much as its not exactly that important, you can still make out the numbers and it appears that the only illegal bit is the 'D'. so it is not like it is trying to deceive cameras or the like.

the exact dimensions of the letters is set out in constructions and use, the german-style letters are too small and narrow

oh and it would have to have 'GB' not 'UK'

Cotty, Lets leave aside the legalities of the plate.

Why do you want a plate that dose nothing for the car, apart from attracting the attention of the Police? Do you like being stopped?

I suppose it may look as though you are trying to make the car look German registered, for the case of their not being any type of exchange cordial for parking tickets and speed cameras.

The subsection refers to the standard of the plate NOT what(font/size/colour) is on it.

Thanks for clearing that one up, that must be recent as I read something a few years back that said a UK europlate didnt conform.

it doesn't, i think it should only be 'GB'

i don't think there even IS a 'distinguishing sign for the UK' only GB, GBJ, GBG etc and whatever Norn Irn has

Not being sarcy here, but what do you want to hear (other than that it's ok)?

I looked at the link VH posted and to me that reads that if it's a dual-purpose plate it can have "no material other than the international distinguishing sign of the United Kingdom" i.e. you can't have a German plate on a UK car or a UK style plate with German markings on the Euro bit.

Because it looks daft, in my opinion, still each to their own I suppose.

I wonder if German people fit plates with English style fonts to their Jags etc.
