Sometimes the fibreglass panel at the side of the footwell disintegrates from the exhaust heat and goes porus, letting in gases and smells from the engine bay, eventually melting the carpet etc.

Check the big ventilation flexi-duct that goes from wing to wing across the back of the engine - it can be repaired with tape if you are trick gynaecologist & close the footwell vent.

OH dear i hope its not that will have a good look this weekend I do have a circular vent in the drivers footwell ill seal that up first and see if that helps , if it does i take it that the hose connected to the vent has come away letting in the exhaust fumes , thanks for the tips tom .

I had an exhaust/petrol fume smell in my Griff since I bought it, and just put it down to the great big V8 in front of me . Replaced my radiator last year, and while I was fiddling around I noticed my Carbon Can wasn't wired up so wasn't venting properly. The fumes were simply coming up through the drivers wing and into the footwell. Spent an afternoon re-wiring and it's been fine every since! thumbup Might be worth checking it's all wired up and all pipes are attached and venting properly....

The other week I could smell petrol vapour and I couldn't suss it out. However, the next time I filled up with fuel I had a "surprise". I opened the boot (as you do) only to notice that I hadn't put the petrol cap on last time and the recess (the width of the car) was half full of petrol!

You should be able to smell petrol for those suggestions (and tank leaks) by sticking nose in the boot and sniffing in the grill area(drivers side). I am a tad confused how the smell of petrol would be described as exhaust tho.

Its also worth quick look under the car & bonnet to see if you have any manifold or exhaust leaks ~ if it really is burnt hydrocarbons that you are smelling.

I reckon a lot of you need enrolling in my sniffer dog training classes hehe

I am surprised that nobody has said 'you get that with this model sir..' - I have had it for as long as i can remember - opening side windows a fraction makes it worse, as does topless - the car is fueled with a great deal of unburned fuel exitting via the 2 big pipes at the rear and because of her little pert bum, gets sucked back into the cab - dealr originally suggested i blocked vents at rear of targa panel above boot - not much better.

Dom at TVR Brum suggested he could re-cal to avoid prob.

My clothes stink of exhaust after a trip and my eyes sting - only had the car 12 years, so i guess it takes a little getting used to............

This is an issue that is starting to spoil my drive or should i say Mrs Pasco's drive whistle
How can we stop fumes being dragged back into the cabin, would longer length exhaust cans help scratchchin and what would be the best heater and vent settings to help stop the smell entering the cabin do you guys suggest ?

Any suggestions please

If you can smell exhaust fumes the first check should always be the exhaust to make sure it's not leaking. It's not always apparent on a noisy car like a Tiv.

TBH It seems to be a mixture of both exhaust and unburnt petrol.
as was said, even if you drop the windows down a little then the problem gets worse yes

How are you getting on with your motor Griffalo any regrets ?

Absolutely no regrets whatsoever... This afternoon I'll be back underneath her slowly removing the old Waxoyl and getting her ready for a bit more TLC on the chassis front. The fact that you can, and sometimes have to work on these cars just helps the bonding process cloud9

That said, I'm getting through latex gloves faster than a gynaecologist biggrin

I ahve the same problem, and having recently been playing with the exhaust system I know there are no leaks from it at all, but it must be coming from somewhere, like Pasco says, I do wonder if the shape of the back of the griff allows it to be sucked back somehow.
do chimp owners suffer from the same problems??

I knew certain Celtic tribes have relationships with Sheep, but I didn't realize that abusing primates was a quirk of BOT'ty folks hehe

I reckon you need sequential injection evil

Mine suffers from this as well, it was worse when I had a couple of exhaust leaks, but even with these fixed you still get a whiff if you have the roof up and the windows open slightly.

How are you supposed to get to the ventilation hose across the back of the engine bay ?

I'd rather not take the engine out... rolleyes

The bible mentions that the rear light clusters must be well sealed otherwise this provides a path apparently, Might give that a go as mine have no sealant around the outside just some foam strip where they roughly meet the bodyshell.
