Targa roof a tight fit?
Discussion
Has anyone else got a targa roof panel which seems like it was made for another car?
My first griff (crosses himself, god bless you Juniper Green) had a roof which was simplicity itself to drop in.
This panel is a complete bar steward to fit, no matter how I seem to fight it just doesn't really seem to fit the contours of the screen as it should. I normally get it 'sort of' and let the roof stays shove it all together. I've even got the upper screen seal apart to make sure it wasn't jammed full of sealant from when I had it replaced. With no sealant at all its still no bloody better.
I'm worried that all this shoving and forcing might crack the screen one day.
I did check it all when I repaired it, but without the mohair you can't really tell.
Does the mohair on your roof wrap completely around the lip at the front ? I remember seeing some and they all seem to be like that. I think without half the mohair it might be an easier fit, but I don't know what effect cutting it off the underside of the lip might have - apart from showing the shoddy fake-carbon edges etc.

Could be that the aperture seal has been changed? Did mine recently with the nearest matching seal that I could find (from Woolies Trim)... did the job but was a little larger in cross-section and has made the targa more difficult to fit.... needs more wriggling and jiggling.... also the windows struggle with the increased friction on the last qtr of closing travel.
I mean the front edge of the panel doesn't really want to go into between the two seals on the screen. I had the top seal replaced when I had the new roof done so I checked it looked the same as others at Chatsworth. Seems to be the same.
The ejector seat event, apart from damaging the panel, also pulled off the top seal in the middle of the screen. So before sticking it back on I thought I'd check it. I've also now pulled the seal off all the way across the screen and removed all the sealant which stuck it. I thought if the new roof guy hadn't cleaned it all up properly that could be the problem, but no, with no sealant on at all the bar steward is still a fight to fit.
It sort of feels like the targa panel doesn't have the same curvature as the screen edge, although it was a lovely fit without its covering.
Anybody know if their roof covering doesn't completely wrap around that front lip on the targa panel? I was wondering if that might be the difference but as it was one of the first jobs I had done on the car I have no detailed pictures of the roof panel.
It could also be the fancy roof material. Its a 3layer sandwich; black inside, waterproof membrane middle, some sort of tech nylon won't fade or discolour outer. Thats why I think it might be that front lip. Is the normal roof just a single piece of fabric?
phew!

I think you will have to lift the body off chassis, lengthen your chassis, cut'n'shut your body to suit and reassemble around your custom roof panel.
To a man of your past experience, now you've altered your bodywork around your manifolds successfully, this should be small potatoes and take only an evening's work!

PS The extra legroom should come in useful as well - especially if you wear thicker socks in the winter.

Could you peel back the front lip & remove all but the top layer of the 'sandwich' material?

Why is it when you start to talk about a problem people tell you the blindingly obvious and you feel dense. Is it just me?
I meant to bring the roof in tonight to have a play with, but I forgot. So I'll have to just laugh myself silly at Victoria Wood and have a go at the roof tomorrow.
So I may be in touch Simon.
Thanks chaps.
