Just thinking about the forthcoming VXR8 and how it is based on the clubsport R8 with a few cosmetic gts extras tacked on but what I was wondering was if I was in Australia and deciding between the R8 and the GTS what exactly is the difference both in price and level of equipment? If our VXR8 is going to have around 420 bhp it is basically the same engine as in the monaro vxr but with a little tweaking. Does the GTS have a higher BHP and if so how is it achieved? which is the better seller in OZ? Are the two cars noticeably different when side by side? It seems to me that the whole thing is just a P.R. exercise to give the vxr range a halo car rather than a profit based one so why not bring in the more powerful of the two rather than what we are getting. Australia is getting the full spec VXR car as part of the exchange program so it would be nice if we did as well.

Engine wise they are identical. Just looking at the specs on
www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/vehicle/specs.php?key=HSV+07AP
and
www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/vehicle/specs.php?key=HSV+07AS
the differences I can see are 20" wheels over 19", better front seats and electronic damper control. Oh and about $12,000

Must say Silver looks quite good on it.

Drivetrain is identical as mentioned. In old days it used to be different with the GTS having quite a bit more power.
There also used to be a trim difference. Maybe there still is, with the R8 being based on the Berlina spec Commodore and the GTS being based on the Calais.
The Monaro was based on the Calais IIRC.

This means things like dual climate zone and other fancy internal gimickry and seat time etc were in the GTS but not the R8. If you have seen an old VT or VX R8 vs GTS you will know what I mean.

To me the main difference is the Magnetic suspension in the GTS. But Oz blokes say its more gimick than anything, though it seems to work nicely.

As discussed previously the best buy is the SS Commodore which isnt being brought in. It has an engine like the new Corvette LS3 rather than the old '04 model used in the HSV's. Its RRP in Oz is in the early $40k mark or well under £20,000

But beggars cant be choosers.

OK so the base SS is $44990 plus ORC so at least $50K on road. Then there is the SSV at $52490plus ORC so getting on for $60K on road.
With these you get the L98 engine at 270KW as opposed to the LS2 @ 307KW in the HSV. So down about 50BHP.
With the SS you don't get the big brakes (4spot fronts on HSVs), and a much more basic level of trim, stereo, etc etc.
You also can't just convert the $ to £ as you need to add freight, import duty (?), VAT (17%?0 less GST (10%). You are actually getting a good deal on the R8/GTS.

Stock for stock yes.
If you are going to mod then perhaps not.

But its not a bad deal for sure.
