If I upgrade the standard 16" wheels to spiders, will I need to have the steering adjusted to limit the amount of lock?? Is this an easy/cheap job?

Don't know about that as mine came with spiders fitted, but the clearance for the rear wheelarches appears to be a little bit of a lottery. Mine seems to foul when I hit even quite moderate bumps. I suspect there's room for having the inner face of the rear wheels machines very slightly, enough to provide enough clearance but until I can get the rear of the car in the air with the spring/damper removed to allow me to play with it, I'm not sure.

I'll be watching this one with interest as I'm thinking of changing from 16" Spiders to either 18" Spiders or some different wheel altogether.

As for the clearance issue, this is probably down to either old springs gone weak (as happened on my car) or you might just need a small adjustment of the ring on the shocks.

The clearance issue is *width*. The 16" wheels can bounce up inside the rear arches, without hitting the arch itself. Not so many of those with 18" wheels.

One mod I read about was to dremel away the inner part of the rolled edge but I'm not keen because you'd reduce the strength of the arch.

A quick fix would indeed be to raise the rear ride height but technically your wheels *should* be able to bounce up inside the arch so you may be compromising the whole setup of the car to cure something the wrong way. I'd prefer to see if the wheels can be made to sit slightly more inward.

The rear rubbage more so depends on whether you have 4 "fronts" or a standard set of front and rears, also depends on car and set up to a degree as they are all slightly different. The spider rears have an offset of 33 compared to the 42 of the fronts, usual practice with the Cerb is to go with fronts all round and therefore pull the rear wheel further into the body - as I say you can get away with rears, I did with no real issues, but then I never had them on when I had a fully loaded boot for touring etc and may well have been an issue at that point.

And now the plug, I may have a set up for sale soon if anyone is looking, 3 good ones and one that carries a lot of weights and I still couldn't really ever get it balanced. Caused a bit of a wheel shimmy at motorway speeds, ideally wants to be used as an exchange wheel and get a re-furbed one back.

Yes you need 4 fronts of a Tuscan, that's the correct offset on mine. No fouling issues, i had to fit lock stops though.

Whenever I meet some of you, you'll have to cast your eye over mine to see whether I've a set of fronts or a set of fronts & rears. I'm sure the clearance issue is only marginal and I know where I could have the rears milled/lathed easily if I could convince myself there was enough "meat" on them to get away with it.

I'd quite like a set of black wheels anyway, so I may just sell them and buy some others.

Having said that, I've just washed the car quite thoroughly, and the silver spiders do look nice. And while retrieving something that had fallen under the car I noticed how mahooosively wide they are. Brought a smile.

Who sells the Spiders?

Also, is it the same thing with four "front" wheels for 16" Spiders?

Thanks for the responses guys. I kinda new about the needing 4 'fronts' issue, was really hoping for info about the bump stops. Where/how/£? etc.

The wheels on ebay didn't reach the reserve, so all a bit of a moot point now anyway!!

Think most dealers sell the Spiders. Depends on the width of the 16" Spiders I guess.

Interestingly (if you are sad like me) this www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp shows that you only get 9mm difference in clearance between the 33 and 42 offset Spiders. Not a lot really.

Dont change to 18 inch spiders if you dislike your cars twitchy feeling...

To add something to the debate.

I've got both wheels, and as discussed before, the turning circle is compromised slightly.

However, this is nothing, compared to trying to clean the friggers. What A pain in the arse. Especially the bit by the brakes, unless you've got hands like "E.T." that is

Try the Meguiar's wheel brush - looks like a long bog brush. The core of the brush is so narrow that it will fit even between the calipers and wheel at the front. Does a top job of cleaning them with no skinned knuckles...

Cheers Beanzy.

I finally got round to putting the Tom Tom in the car with the 18"'s on yesterday, and the speedo is miles out.

9mm can be all the difference between rubbing and not though. I've rectified my rear clearance issue with just 5mm.

mine only started to foul after fitting AVO's. I keep adjusting ride hight/damping not far of now.

Ride height and front to rear rake determine handling characteristics. Aren't you compromising that by adjusting your suspension to iron-out a clearance issue?
