Never used a D70 but: Set it to SPEED PRIORITY and you can then decide how long the shutter will open. This will of course alter the apature of the lens equally.... altering depth of field.

As a rule of thumb, fast speeds for sharp, narrow depth of field, slow speeds for landscapes where you want foreground and background in focus.

Thankyou for your prompt reply!

Reading through my manual it explains shutter speed setting but not brilliantly, just need the exposure doing now!

DC53 - Exposure is combination of shutter speed and aperture. I think you need to find a decent basic book or web-site and have a read up or you're going to find it a frustrating learning experience.

In the meantime, try using the P mode. The camera will pick a shutter speed and aperture for you (which you can change if you wish) or try A (Aperture priority) mode. Start with a middling aperture like F8 or 9 and make a note of the shutter speed which the camera is choosing. As GetCarter says, if you need to pick the shutter speed rather than the aperture for a particular reason, then mode S is the one you want. M (manual) you get to pick both.

The Nikon manuals are OK if you know your way around a camera and just need to know about the controls, but if not not then pick up a book/magazines/web-sites and you'll enjoy it a lot more and more quickly.

Cheers

Perfect, i've been messing around out of my window with passing cars wth their lights on and having a go at the
long streak of light sort of thing using different shutter speeds.

I want to get over to a motorway late at night and get some nice pictures, this is why i wanted to know how to use the shutter speed etc.
