In preparation for MOT is was having a closer than normal look at the rear light clusters and noticed that one tail light was slightly brighter than the other.

On investigation one side has a 21/4w lamp and the other 21/5w which explains the difference. They must have been like that for some years because I have never replaced any of the rear lamps. All the other lamps, Brake, Indicator, Reverse are singe 21w fittings. The 4 or 5 w tail being a dual filament, the 21w part of which is used for the rear fog.

All the single filament fittings are clearly marked 21w The tail/fog socket is stamped 21/something illegible. At a guess I would go for 21/4 The 21/4 lamp seems to fit better than the 21/5 but 4w does seem a bit feeble for the tail lamp.

Anybody know for certain what they should be oln a 1998 car?

Hi Steve, the tail light you require is the 566 type 21/4.They fit spot on.When I got my Griff 3years ago the previous owner had jammed a 21/5 into the socket.I think its the offset on the pins which are different.Regards,Dave.

Steve, you may need to go somewhere like Camberley Auto Factors for the type 21/4 bulb with the offset pins. I couldn't find any in Halfords. They had stacks of the incorrect 21/5 ones though.

OK. Thanks for the info. Looks like the previous owner did the same on mine.
