Which Car to Take?
Discussion
Help! We can't decide which car to take to LeMans. Being a LeMans virgin, I'm not too sure of the score down there. I've read all the stuff on here regarding bbq's, beer quantities, camp sites etc... and all VERY usefull indeed. BUT, which car should we take? The choices are:
1 - My good friends gorgeous TVR Chimeara 500. Obviously it's a convertible, so nice if its sunny. Also I don't have to drive much....
2 - My 550 Maranello. Obvious plus points, but will drink enormous quantities of fuel, and how safe is Le Mans?
But we can't get much gear in any of these, so alternatively
3 - The daily X5. It's got cruise, we can chuck everything in it, and sleep under it.
Thoughts please.....

Take both if you can, there's is nothing better to start the weekend than convoying down enjoying other peoples exotica going by, and letting us enjoy yours! Le Mans maybe boisterous, but you don't have to worry about your car(s), 99.99% of people there are petrolheads, and your transport will get the respect it deserves. For that one and only weekend in year, my Focus will probably be a rarer sight on the roads than a Ferrari 550.
Another vote for take both.
Once your in france and driving down with a load of other exotica the person without their car will be pining for their own car. Trust me.
And who cares about petrol. My car is rather insubstantial in comparison to the ones your considering but i'm budgetting 1/4 tank and hour, maybe less and without having a job to pay for any of it

Can't help but agree with all the other posts. And it's getting increasingly more difficult to have a serious blat on the way down as 'les flics' are out in force and the penalties for transgressing are severe - so your petrol consumption needn't be horrific. Best to chill out and enjoy the ride and do it in the best motor you can. Even if I can't afford a 550 at least I can enjoy seeing all the exotica on parade.
OK, maybe the fuel isn't the real issue here, it's just that I really couldn't think of a decent reason why we wouldn't use it
I'm not a big fan of my own company, so as appealling as a mini convoy sounds, it's probably a non starter. And I only have the one campsite pass.
Nice to see some different prospective all the same.

Not sure that will apply this year the campsite passes are hang on your mirror type with a bar code on them... Now if they sorted their act out the idea is you get scanned on the the way in and out so only one of your tickets is in the campsite at any one time... As to if this working, I could not say...
For the cost of a Technopart ticket I don't think its fair on those who have paid...

Fair point, well made.
To put your mind at rest:
a. we're in Houx
b. neither of us fancies having to leave their car on the side of the Autoroute for 5 days if the offered info turns out to be corrupted

Ill be taking my new LP640, so I don't think you got anything to worry about with the 550. I've taken my other lambo for the last two years and apart from it getting covered in dust I've had no issues.
Andy.
Andy.
Whats Simon going in? His Murci? Or are you sharing the drive down?
I thought the Chimeara had a big boot. Last time I went a Chimeara owner took a double burner and huge gas bottle. I asked where his sleaping bag was and he pointed to the double duvet and said "dont need one".
I took a TVR S1 and still had lots of room even with the roof stowed. Just need to pack smart and buy what you cant pack when you arrive
