Can you free a seized wastegate insitu?
Discussion
If I have a seized wastegate, how would I free it. Can I lubricate or spray it with something to free it, or will the turbo have to come off?
Also if I carefully take off the actuator rod, should it be able to slid back on again or should the rod be shorter or longer than the closed postion of the wastegate flap to keep it closed?
Cheers,
Dave Walters

Calvin, I've taken the rod off, just lsid it off gently. The lever is still stuck, I have just managed to free it using WD40 but it's still stiff. Can I do anything more?
Also the rod, when I've closed the lever appears to be too short, does it need lengthening? Surely the wastegate should be closed tight when the engine's swithed off.

I'm not quite sure just what to do the WD40 will just burn off from the heat. Must be a build up in there. Hope it can be cleaned. Did you remove it or disconnect the exhaust? Hope it is not binding on anything. I can't imagine what would hang it up. I will check on my wastegate when I get home from work. It's 9:30am now so it will be a while.

Calvin it's 4:30PM (7 hours forward) here. I've just had a look and all my bolts are rusty. It's the climate here!
My have to put it into a garage so they can crack the nuts off.

Dave,
Just out of curiosity, what makes you think the wastegate is stuck? If it were stuck open you would get very little boost. If closed you would get overboost. Unless it is stuck partially open?
Disconnecting the wastegate to have a look inside is okay. If you were to crack open the actual wastegate itself, the gate is under coil spring tension and care must be taken so that the spring does not accidentally come shooting out.
The gate itself should be closed under the spring tension. As the turbo spools up the pressure should press the rod against the gate to open it up on boost.
The spring tension and the shim plates must not be altered if cracking open the gate.
Mine is closed at rest with the arm towards the diaphram capsule.

Calvin, it's definately stuck, I can just about move it with some grips and it doesn't spring back. Iam currently getting overboost. Mine's fully closed when the lever arm to the wastegate is away from the diaphram i.e looking into the engine bay towards the left.
If I move it towards the diaphram, the flap is rattly and you can hear it more.
Cheers,

You may have have it rusted shut or somehow the spring is binding it shut. Unless the gate plate is fouling the purge. I have this real funny solution to everything which is to take things apart. Just be carefull as under the wastegate access plate held on with bolts is the spring under tension. I have not taken one apart yet. but have an exploded diagram. The instructions call for the plate to come off but warn of not altering the shim or spring settings. Also that the spring is under tension and may fly off so care should be taken. Once you remove the spring, the gate should be loose or at least easier to work it back and forth to clean it out. I wonder if the spring has broken and is somehow binding the flap closed.
I wish I new more about the European cars. I'm not sure if your car has the outboard wastegate or an internal one like the older G cars and 88 S cars. Just about all wastegates work the same. with a spring keeping the gate shut till the turbo boost presses against the capsule to move the rod to open up the gate.

I believe mine is integral wastegate. It's bolted as part of the turbo. I think it's just rusted. Iam not that mechanically minded or have the tools to have a go myself.
I also have another problem with my new wheels. My locking wheel nut adaptor has rounded down and I can't get my old wheels off. The adaptor is a mle ended star shape which goes into a female ended star shape bolt. Both are recessed, any ideas?
cheers,

ps. I know I should put a new post on but I already have a few on there. Might just take it to a garage today.

Dave,
You will have to sacrifice the lug nuts to get them off, but as your 'key' is shot, you're looking at replacement anyway. Take a Vice Grips and jam them on the offending lug nut and get them loose. Only way I know of. Good Luck! Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE
