Ferrari... I don't understand it. You pay a shed load of cash to supposedly get a precision made engine. Just for them to install a DAMN RUBBER BELT to look after the cam timing. How backwards is that?

To delicate for my liking. Give me an unburstable American V8 with a METAL timing chain anyday. I want performance I can use regularly without fear of the mechanicals letting loose.

Unless you can really, really afford it. You will spend more time babying that car than actually enjoying it for what it was intended.

Just my opinion!

Cambelts only should be about £800 from an indie (it's an engine out job). As part of a major service you're looking at £1400 or thereabouts.

Manufacturers use rubber band in their engines so they can charge you £1000's to replace them.

Just had this job done at Lancasters (main dealer)Colchester. About £1000 for cam belts and £600 for service so £1600. You may get a bit less with and Indie.

thanks for the cam comments. If not recently changed will make a lower offer for the car.

1,400 with service. Assuming nothing else needs doing (which it probably will).

The manual(on early cars) states 4 years but that is wrong if you cantact Ferrari it should be every 3 years or 25000mls that the belts get replaced. These days the change can be done without removing the engine hence the greatly reduced cost for this job as the labour for the engine out way was 20hrs alone.

Mine was £120.

Wow!!! A Toyota is cheaper than a Ferrari to service!! Who would have though it..

Seriously though, the belt issue is no big deal and gets talked to death. An extra grand every 4 years isn't so bad when you are talking about a £35K+ car. Most people are happy to put up with a lot more in depreciation alone on their 'cheap-to-run' motor.

Be realistic. Your car is '97, it is old, frail, and problem ridden. If you take it in for a belt and major service you are probably NOT going to get much change from £3000. Anyone that does either is not using there car much or it just plain lucky

Also worth a mention is doing the work ya self. Times have changed over resent years, even as resent as the last 4 years. There are a lot of 355 and 348 owners who do there own belts at home. The 355 is of a certain age now and are were the 328s used to be. So some thing as basic as a belt change can cost only the price of the belts (or bearings if needed)and new fluids. And of course your time.
If you have a slightly above basic knowledge in how to wield a spanner, belts can be done in a day or so. Even with the engine out. It took me only 3 hours to take my engine out from under the car using the two floor jack method. Changing the belts and even bearings alone takes way less than an hour. So providing that there is no other problems spotted while the engine is out, its back in with in the day or so. Though its advised to spend an extra day cleaning the engine while its out and checking for pending problems. But this thread is about a belt change and anything else is another subject.
Remember that you have the full back up of the ferrari websites such as www.ferrarichat.com and www.fcars.co.uk in which you will find like minded folk like my self who will talk you through any worries that you may have.
Most importantly is remember that a ferrari engine is still just an engine all said and done. Yes the parts can be expensive but there are ways of finding the parts at half the cost through various means
But like i said if you are a little handy with a spanner then its a walk in the park.
If there is anyone in the midlands that is thinking of doing there own belt change, email me and i will help ya its a walk in the park as i always say.
