I'm having a bit of trouble getting my windscreen clean. Got a new one a couple of weeks ago and all was good until I went to clean it with Windolene. Didn't do it properly, it went all smeary, so I had a go at doing it again with Cillit Bang. (It was the most brightly-coloured bottle in the kitchen cupboard: I equate bright colours with effectiveness when it comes to cleaning products).

Cillit Bang doesn't work. Now I have more smears. Exacerbating the problem is the fact that I've recently switched to those PIAA wipers that coat the screen in silicone; I think the Windolene/Cillit Bang residue has been sealed in with silicone.

The windscreen had a chip repaired at the weekend and the area around the repair is crystal clear, so I rang the Auto Windscreens place that did it to find out what they used. The chap I spoke to was not helpful and said he didn't know what it was other than that it came in a big bottle.

What would the best thing be to use to get rid of all the filthy muck that now sits on my screen?

(Oh, and I've also tried meths, but with no effect.)

Try Einszett Glass Polish. It's not something you'll find in the local shops, but it is very effective and shifts pretty much anything.

Firstly wash the windscreen with a decent car shampoo, dry it and then use a clay bar along with a lubricant. Dry any residue with a microfibre cloth and then use something like Stoner Invisible Glass or Swissvax Crystal or Autoglym Glass polish. Clean the wiper blades with Autoglym Glass Polish and then put P21s Windscreen wash booster into your washer bottle.

Thanks for the suggestions. As a sidenote, on the one occasion I've tried using a clay bar in the past, I had one hell of a job getting it off my fingers. Should it be so sticky?

You need to keep it warm, but it should not be sticky!! Its true that some clays are better than others, and I would still use it as and when needed but not more than a couple of times a year. Decent lubricant is a must.

For a quick clean use wet newspaper.
The ink somehow cleans glass.
Honest it works pretty well.

They can get sticky, just make sure it is warm when you use it and mallable, make sure you work the clay to this state before using it.

In use the clay should aquaplane across the surface and not stick.

Another vote for newspaper - as previously stated it's to do with the ink - so much so that Page 3 is particularly good.

Status update: after trying many of the suggestions above I discovered the the gunk was on the inside of the glass. It came off easily with Windolene and a cloth. I felt foolish.
