gearbox trouble
Discussion
anyone having trouble with there t56 mine has developed a strange problem if you use 4th and 5th hard after a bit in 5th it wont come out of 5th just seems stuck it will come out with a good pull then it seems ok until you push it hard again.it also seem vibey in 4th&5th, 1st,2nd,3rd 6th all ok any ideas ??
You'd be better asking over on LS1Tech.
Amber or Joe would know better.
The T56 Ive been using until just recently, was a totally standard one and I used Fuchs ATF4000 oil in it. It never gave me any bother at all, shifts were always slick and smooth all things considered.
Is it the same up and down the box ? You cant pull it out of 5th even when the clutch is down ?
Could the clutch be dragging ?
Are upshifts and downshifts ok aside from 5th ?

hi stevie the shifts are good but if you leave it in 5th for say a mile under power (country lanes etc) it will not come out of gear not a clutch problem it is clearing well, its like the selector is stuck it takes a good hard pull to get it out it does not click out it is like it is siezed. it also seemes a bit vibey under full torque .its making 570ft lb i thought it would take that ok.i know you can get better internals for these boxes but this one has done 5000 miles tops hoped it wolud last better,i have used dextron 3 as recommended. under normal driving it works perfectly .
might be way off the but thought I'd mention some related experiences just in case as I had the T56 replaced under warranty by HSV on the Coupe due what turned out to be a busted circlip that caused havoc with 5th/6th cogs being able to move around. Supposedly happens quite a bit with the t56 if used at low revs too much in cruising gears - ie 2500rpm or lower - esp 5th & 6th. The main symptom on mine was the gear stick moving around and vibrating more than usual when in the gears affected - esp when you apply power then back off again (stick moved because the acual cogs were drifing forward & back inside the box). If this aint happening in yr case then unlikely to be the prob. Other issue could be clutch slave cylinder as this has gawn on a few & the typical build up to complete failure is being unable to select gears every now & then at first but then gradually worsens (would improve if the pedal was pumped hard a few times). Roger @ Monkfish & Mark (ex LSV) are brainiacs on this from my experience but i'm sure others are too.
I know every case is different, but Ive put a lot more torque than that through mine. But I dont see how torque could affect the shifting mechanism.
It does sound like a fault more than anything. Perhaps harsh changes have bent a selector fork or something ?
