Hand held nav unit
Discussion
When we were on the Staples 2 Naples rally last year we used the Tom Tom 710 in the car, when we needed to use it on foot we simply unplugged it from its cradle and away we went.
Internal battery lasted about 90 minutes or so
That said, something like a Garmin I-Que will do the same job and the battery will last a lot longer (the colour screen on the Tom Toms is a real battery killer)

Garmin to dedicated units for walking, trekking and biking, all of which has specific features to the task at hand and I'd imagine are loaded with more specific data, such as altitude. These are also rugidised for the job and shaped for hand-held use.
Alteratively using a PDA/phone with SatNav is a possibility, I've got MemoryMap on my phone with high quality OS maps of London which can be damn handy at times, if you're into walking/cycling you can download the maps for the area you are visiting and plot route on your PC a terrain map.

Ive got the Garmin 60 CX which we use mostly for geocaching. The base map is pretty poor but if you get the Topo maps of UK is near enough OS level and includes contour lines and footpaths. Doesnt come cheap though, the unit is £300 or so and the maps £150, you also need a micro SD card for storage. Thye do cheaper ones but they do have minimal memory and so what you can load onto them map wise is limited.
