Can any Grif / Chim owners please advise me as to whether there should be some sort of gasket between the exhaust manifolds and the Y piece? I have re-seated at the end of a new cam fit and there is quite a gap. I have tapped away with a rubber mallet and tightened the clips over and over. They're tight, but there's still a gap!!! Should I use exhaust sealing paste?

Any top tips gratefully received.

Hi,
just gone through a cam change myself. No there are no gaskets, when I undid the first clamp ring the Y piece and manifold sprang apart by about 3 mm. To fit both clamps I loosly fitted both exhaust manifolds finger tight, this gave enough play to clamp in the Y piece no problem, then I tightened up the manifold bolts. If you fully tighten the manifold bolts before fitting the Y piece then you will have a gap you mention. You need to use a strap to pull the exhaust manifolds up to the Y piece flanges or loosen off the manifolds. Both methods are mentioned in several threads.

No gasket. You may need to pull the ends of the manifolds in to get them into the correct position before the joint will close properly.

You wont get the joint to seal correctly unless you slacken the bolts on the manifolds to allow the Y piece to sit back on the manifold faces fit the clamps nip up only then re-tighten manifolds then tighten Y piece clamps, its up to you if you want to take a chance without replacing the man gaskets if their sound i cant see a problem with this,i would not suggest forcing it back in either, good luck.

when i did mine last, I used a strap and ratchet around the 2 manifolds to draw them up against the Y piece flanges.
Previously i tried using molegrips to clamp each flange together but you have to apply the pressure evenly on both sets of flanges, otherwise it will tilt the Y piece on one side making impossible to mate the other side. Took me fipping ages this way until someone mentioned the first method.

Thanks for the advice chaps, used my boat's rachet strap on the manifolds last night and managed to pull them into the y pice nicely! Thanks again.

My experience is that you do not need to slacken the manifld bolts, and if you do, it's a real bugger of a job.

It can take two of you, but with a little persuasion and a good lever I always manage to get mine to line up properly.

I always use a little exhaust assembly putty and remember the clamps work best if you tighten, then tap around them to make sure they are seated properly, then tighten again, and repeat the process.

Don't try and pull the Y piece and manifold in to line with the clamp, without tapping, you'll break the stud before you get it right.
