Just discovered that my car has an 88 degree thermostat fitted. On the basis that 74 degree stats are available is this likely to have been the source of my cooling problem (now masked by fan override i've fitted)??

Also tested stat with boiling water and noticed it only opens a few mm - is this normal?

Further request I am afraid - can someone also advise me where the temp guage sensor is?

As to the few mm bit, have pushed the bullet bit on a new one and that's how far it seems to open. No more than 5 anyway from memory.

Definitely not, its a classic sign of a knackered stat. BTW the sensor for the temp gauge is normally screwed into a boss on the front of the inlet manifold, not far from the stat housing.

I stand corrected.
Can't find the offending article. I bought it but it was never used. Does a pot of hot water open it further or had I bought a duff one? Moot subject for it anyway now.

74 degree stat ordered from Rimmer Bros today. A bargain at £4.25. Hope it works.

Taken it out for a blast tonight after fitting 74 degree thermostat at weekend. Seems to be doing the job, as it sitting at desired temp somewhere between 50 and 90.

Only thing is now I am paranoid it is running too cool and causing engine wear - bollxx should I have fitted an 82 degree stat...?

when cruising my temp is about 40 to 50 and when sitting in traffic it goes up to 80 to 85 then the fan comes in and holds it around 80 ish

i must admit i do wounder if the oil is doing it's job when cruising with the temp being so low,

i suppose if you have good oil pressure when cruising things should be ok

Blimey that sounds a bit cool. My 390 engined 350i runs at a constant 80°, only rising when actually stationary in traffic etc. Can't recall what stat i have in mine, i changed it from an 88 when i bought it and think i fitted an 82 but can't quite recall.
I have fitted a large oil cooler with stat as well to help wit hthe oil temp.

Does anyone know what temp the Griffiths/Chimeras run at?

Don't assume the temp gauge reading is accurate. Useful to show changes in behaviour, but the absolute value has to be taken with a pinch of salt.

0 to 120C

80-90 is normal. 95-100 is a bit dodgy... 100+ IS SOMETHING WRONG TIME.

Are you sure you've got a thermostat fitted, 'cos that seems a bit low (assuming the guage is accurate - it isn't on mine...)
