Hi

I bought some twin forty dellorto's some 10 years ago (manual choke). They where second hand and i was told they worked ok. They where jetted for a crossflow. Im hoping to bolt them up to a 1600cc stg 3 pinto head. Im hoping to use the head / carbs on a 2000cc or 2100cc block.

How much to strip the carbs and get them fully refurbed? Any suggestions as to where i can get that done would be appreciated as well.

What about DIY? Is it possible to strip the carbs myself, then rebuild. If so, how much £££?

Any input very much welcome

thanks

A Google search finds a service kit for a pair of 40DHLA carbs for £20 on ebay
With a bit of care and attention you can do it yourself.
Give the outside a good scrub, before you strip them, so they look good when they go back on.
Strip it down, taking photos if not confident, then clean everything with carb cleaner.
Take care when putting back together as most parts will be brass into ali neither of which will deal with you being a bit heavy handed.

Looks like the guy can deal with other models and jets so he may even be able to advise on what jets you should start with.

Thanks steve. Just opened one of the carbs and its full of white powder / rust. At £20 its got to be worth a punt. Can i run my carbs etc on the normal ford dizzy or do i need an uprated dizzy? If so, whats the cheapest option?

thanks

DIY carb refurb is certainly possible. Never worked on DHLAs but have rebuilt several DCOEs, including fitting new bearings and spindles as well as cleaning all the internal passages.

Haynes do a Weber manual but don't know about Dellortos. You might well find something about them on the Internet though - exploded diagrams etc.

As for the dizzy, although not ideal you can use the standard Ford one, but you'll have to either disconnect the vacuum advance or else run a feed from each inlet. Don't try and run it off one inlet because the advance will be all over the place.

I had a similar problem with the dellortos on my old plus 2, I stripped and cleaned them several times and still had running issues. I got Carburettor Exchange in Leighton Buzzard, Beds to over haul them and had no further problems!!. Finding the correct mix of jets, air correctors and chokes is a job for an experienced rolling road man who knows side draughts and has a pile of parts.

The white powder is ali corrosion which is quite common, especially if they've been anywhere damp.

As for Dizzy the standard Vac advance dizzy will have the wrong curve, but can be locked up on the vac base & will get it running or you can buy various ones set up alreday from Aldon etc.

The best book is by John Passini <sp> who used to work for Webber at the time.
These are the titles if you fancy a trawl through abe or Amazon.
Weber Carburetors: theory / by John Passini. - Speed Sport Books

Passini, J.
Weber Carburettors / J. Passini. - Speedsport, 1968

Passini, J.
Weber Carburettors, Part 2: tuning and maintenance / J. Passini. - Speedsport, 1973

If not Veloce books list this one which is next best. http://tinyurl.com/24ntld

hi & thanks.

I went to my library and halfords looking for the haynes dhla carb manual. no luck. I've ordered the servicing kit (thanks steve) and am waiting for that to arrive. I also bought some plasti-kote enamel paint to paint the carb housings, as it will save me spending hours with a dremel trying to polish the metal.

I was wondering if i can strip the carbs completely, then rebuild once the haynes manual and servicing kit arrive? In other words is it ok to strip the carbs completely? Will the manual give me full guidance. will the manual allow me to build the carbs from the raw components?

thanks again.
