Is there a reason why there are so few concept cars based on Porsche's? After a bit of googling I've only been able to come up with 2.

1989 Porsche Panamericana Cabriolet.

I'm surprised Ferry Porsche didn't die of fright after getting that for his 80th birthday.

1970 Porsche Tapiro Concept

I quite like that in a '70s wedgey way.

For Italian manufactures there are loads. Even Bentely and Aston appear to spur designers on more.

Porsche have done some, including the Panamerica above, like the Gruppe B concept which became the 959, and the Carrera GT Concept in 2003 or so...

I had the chance once to sit in this Panamericana at my local Porsche dealer. Amazing how crude these show cars are made. They look so much more flashy on the pics.

Had a poster of the panamerica on my wall. Thought it looked cool at the time, looks hideous now.

the boxster was shown in Detroit back in '93 at the motorshow.

The production model took a lot from the concept, although the interior was changed quite a bit, the rest were details TBH

Let's be honest, Podie: the production boxster looks like Chinese copy of the Detroit showcar.

Yes. The reason is that Porsche fans are traditionally scared of new concepts. The reaches back as far as the presentation of the 901 in 1963, where Porsche-fans disliked the car, because it was set to replace the (much loved) 356. In the late seventies, the same appeard to happen with the 928, although this time, Porsche did not stop 911 production, so the customer's wallets kept that one alive. Later, the Panamericana was just a birthday present from the employees to Ferry Porsche. He even didn't like it, nor was it planned to go into production. Beside the Boxster Concept, there has been a Cayenne Concept iirc; with both, Porsche tested customer interest with, rather than using them to shape a brand image.

hehe Other way round I thought..!

Air intakes moved, rear lights changed, and the shape lost a bit, but the exposed gear linkage and wierd cooling fans went... as did the markings etched on the glass of the instruments...
