Superb Chris Harris 997 cup video from Snetterton
Discussion
Found this on Autocar, (hope it is not a problem to post other haymarket articles?)
Having really enjoyed a superb Goldtrack day at Snetterton last week, I thought this was great, looking forward to my next visit.

I liked his line into Sears, seems to be the Kurgen/Lockie approved route
Not sure about his take on the esses though?...thought entry could be quicker into the second part without losing too much on the way out (what do I know????)
Agree on the Jag comments,,,anything weighing over 1300kg on a track......outrageous

Sears is pretty straight forward to be honest and patience is rewarded. If you need to squirt the power through the esses, you havn't gone in quick enough. Its all trail throttle in a 996 cup from turn in and I doubt its that different in a 997. If you carry to much speed to the last corner of the esses you are compromised on exit speed to the the bomb hole. The 997 looks a more stable car than the 996. Interesting but as a guide, his times would have put him about P7 on the grid in the Open race behind 3 996 cup cars carrying balast. On saying that, he may have been quicker off camera.
good clip.
We have some in car at Snett in the 996 cup car. I'll see if I can post it. It will be an interesting comparison between the two cars.
Steve R
I've just checked the data on my laptop from that day and CH competed 26 laps and his fastest was a 1:10.95.
Not sure where that would put him on the grid in the Open Series but we are not really comparing like for like here as the car is set up for endurance racing; harder tyres, pads, less camber, 120litre tank etc.
Even so, very handy for his first drive in the car.

A 1.10.9 would have put him on the front row in the last Open event at Snetterton so I would say its a very good start!
There are a few different lines that can be used at the Esses. I'm not so sure about not being able to get in the throttle between the left and right handers. I would be very suprised if the optimum speed around the left hander coincided with the optimum speed into the next right without an adjustment of the throttle. I know I can get hard into the throttle for a moment between the two corners and I definately cannot carry anymore speed into the left hander. I have tried many times only to spin off!!!!
Different cars, different lines, different speeds! Still, 1.10.9 is a very good starter even for a 997!
Cheers,
Richard.

Steve, look forward to your own video lap postings...
I drove the esses in a 300bhp 993 CS, and had time to apply power between the 2 turns of the esses, trailing throttle, then stabbed the brakes before throwing the car into the right turn...on the power to settle things and away!!...as pointed out though, we are all talking about different cars, weights and power, certainly impressed with Chris H's lap time, it would be great to see him guest in either the open or a Porsche cup race?

I thought he'd be quicker.
Agreed, That is a good start.
Best of luck.

I agree Richard. It's a funny little section and can be taken on or off power depending what you are driving and how it is set up.
In a FF1600 you are on the power between the two apex's, you may well be on it in your 935? I wasn't trying to give a definitive answer to taking that section, only the optimum in a 996 cup. I got that from Richard Westbrook who did a few laps in my car at Snett earlier in the year and punched in a 1.11.2. When we analysed the data, we saw that he was flat shifting. It's worth 1.65 seconds at Snet. Thats how we worked our benchmark. 1.11.2 plus 1.65 seconds equalls 1.12.85. Before the sequential box of the 997, almost all cup drivers were flat shifting. It makes so much difference on the lap. A huge amount in avery high powered car like yours. I never realised how much difference it makes. Do you run a sequential box?

Harris is the man.
Having witnessed Chris's driving first hand at the 'ring, I can confirm he is a top wheelman.

as you passed him ?
If only! My car seemed to suddenly develop 6 reverse ratios!
Somehow I doubt that.
Modest as ever John

Damn right. I love the way the engine just instantaneously dies when he switches the ignition off at the end.
I can't decide if I want to be L. Hamilton or C. Harris. Both have better day jobs than me.
