Gents,

I have been searching for an early 996 coupe (manual) for several months, without luck.

The criteria are:

- Colour should be a little out of the ordinary e.g. Speed Yellow, Guards Red Etc
- 70K miles max with complete history
- Sensibly priced. I intend to keep the car for around 2 years and do around 7k miles a year. Ideally, I don’t want to lose my shirt or depreciation or have a car that is really difficult to shift.

I cam across this rather unusual example:

www.pistonheads.com/sales/155453.htm

I know this is a real Marmite colour, even more so that red or Yellow. The view I take, rightly or wrongly, is that it is a safe bet at the right price. At what point do you think a car like this is a safe bet?

Thanks for your opinions.

There is no realistic 'safe' price for a car as individual as this: odd colour; upgraded engine (no warranty possible?); generally fiddled with.

It's been messed with.

Should be very cheap.

Porsche market doesn't like cars which have been bu66ered about with.

What if all of the upgrades, including the engine, were done at the factory? Would this make it more sellable?

I mean the "upgraded engine."

You need details. If it's the factory power kit then it's a minter.

Otherwise, avoid.

Unlikely. Your buyers are people like the posters above. I also wouldn't buy that car. There's no way you could build a GT3 properly cheaper than buying a GT3 in the first place. Even if it was all factory done it's still not going to be the proper balance of chassis, brakes, etc..

You have a very tight set of requirements, which will be achievable on your budget.

If your not worried about resale, you should be able to haggle on that car, as said, the upgrades may scare away traditional buyers, but ensure its a good job, and you'd be happy with any big bills that the modifications may cause.

The colour is gorgeous. The "upgrades", however, sound fishy and you will need to clarify who has done what. E.g. is the upgraded engine the factory kit?, what did they do to suspension, breakes and the lot and who dunnit? Wiser probably to keep your hands off this...

It's been sprayed at some point I reckon, Riviera Blue would have been a special order if it is original. Find out.

Often these "one offs" are rehashed crashed vehciles which get pulled straight and sprayed.

Looks nice and I really like that colour, (even if it doesn't agree with my football allegiance ) Never like it when someone badges a car it is clearly not. It just seems too good to be true and I'd be wary of the lack of more specific detail. If I was trying to sell it and had done all the mods claimed I'd have given much more detail.
Let us know how you get on if you make further enquiries on it.

agree with that, easy way of checking for a respray is to take a look under the bonnet, if the stickers are still there you should be OK.

on the engine side, I bought a "messed with" 996 and stoopidly didnt check anything, nothing, just bought it, to be fair though the messed with parts where a great advantage I guess I was just lucky, I know im in a minority but i would buy a "messed with" C2 again, it was fab.

I think it would depend on what lump is in there. If it's a real GT3 lump it's a very different animal to say a chipped 3.4

Bought out by 'Big Boys Toys' and based in Thurrock now

Riviera is a great colour though I'm not sure it suits the 996.

Body kit includes the rarely specced rear spats

Aong as its not damage repaird or colour changed it could be a decent buy but after haggling obviously

I like the colour - someone just painted a GT3 Cup this colour and is doing some of the Open races - it looks great and really stands out.

The fact that things have been done to it doesn't necessarily make it a bad car - it may make it a better one.

A colour change isn't necessarily a bad thing if done properly - I know a guy who last year changed the colour of his owned-from-new Exige purely because it needed attention to stone-chips and he fancied a change while he was at it. It went from metallic blue to Dyno Rod dayglo orange (was at Snet 10 days ago if anyone saw it).

More important on this one to do all your homework and probably have a full inspection by someone like Peter Morgan. Get all the information before making a decision - or jumping to conclusions as some seem intent on doing rolleyes

he asked for opinions, people are advising caution. as far as i can see, this is a valid opinion.

if theres a more patronising and smug smiley than the rolleyes one ive yet to see it.
