Have a rover V8 fitted in a TVR and would like to replace the dizzy with something programmable. This obviously requires a Crank sensor and most aftermarket ECUs seem to like the 36 teeth and one missing arrangement. There are some commercially made bolt on sensor wheels, one of which I have. Having already suffered a broken crank on the engine I am nervous of altering the balance with what seems to be a fairly heavy part.. Loads of people must have done this so if you are one of them how did you solve the problem ?

I use a 36-1 toothed wheel bolted on to the back of the front pulley. It's not particularly heavy, and being centered on the crank shaft fairly accurately (it has to be for the MVR sensor to work reliably) there's no reason to expect it to affect the balance.

Hi Peter

Are you using the pressed steel Ford part, the JE part or something else ? I have the JE kit and thought it was a bit heavy to hang on the front. As by design it has to have a tooth missing it has to add an off balance effect.

I'm using the JE part. The mass of the missing tooth is small enough to be ignored in the scheme of things imo, I've run like this for about 20,000 miles with no apparent problems.

Is it a serp engine? - I done my mates 500, very straightforward:

I also used the same disk and technique on my chevy - works great.

Eliot.

Many be it was just coincidental that the crank snapped and was nothing to do with the trigger wheel..

They have been known to break before..

Ive fitted a relatively light DTA supplied 36-1 trigger wheel to both my RV8, and LS1.

No problems here.

we run the JE trigger wheel and sensor/sensor bracket on the Tuscan racer no problem. mind you trigger wheel is a LOT lighter than the dsump pully wheel
