Fuel tank lining?

Long story cut a bit shorter here but do these cars have a lining in the petrol tank and can it disolve? My S1 had fuel pump problems last year while abroad. When they drained the tank to replace the pump the petrol came out a kind of very dark purple-ish colour and smelt very odd (looked like parafin that had been left hanging around for a few years). Could have been a bad fill-up, but it was a main service station in Portugal so should have been ok. Anyway I have been using the car ever since then (maybe 2000 miles) and no problems. However, a kind of blue-ish haze has gradually built up around the body work where the exhuasts exit (doesn't come off with washing - will have to T-Cut it). Any advice welcome and two basic questions: if they do have a lining that is disolving what will be the eventual outcome - leaking petrol tank? injector problems? another knackered fuel pump? or worse? and if I need to remedy I guess fuel tank replacement must be a body off job - so any idea what I might have to pay.
