How tight do you have the innermost row of head bolts done up??
Theres an inherent problem with all but the latest of the Rover engines, in that the 3rd (inboard) row of bolts on each head tends to jack the outer edge of the head off the block, causing fluids to mix etc due to lack of sealing.
The fix is to renew the gaskets, probably fit ARP studs, and only do the inboard row up to about 20 or so ft/lb.
The very last head castings to be produced didnt even have the holes bored for the 3rd row of bolts: its an official Rover fix.
I would think that the incompressibility of the copper gasket compared to the composite item probably exacerbates your problem. Dont get me wrong, the copper gaskets seem to be damn good, but they dont crush (thats why theyre good!), and hencewont do any gap filling if the head and block mating faces arent dead parallel.
Just my tuppen'orth...
Ed.
P.S. If this IS the issue, you may be getting oil in the water too...

Sorry for the O/T but do anyone knows what N.C.K means? It`s stamped on my engine. Oh, that means Now Completely Knackered. Best whip it out and sell it for scrap. Tell you what, I'll give you a tenner for it, just to help you out like..
only joking
Oh no!!!!

NCK (racing of Coventry, links with Andy Rouse?) are THE first special wedge engines. Keep it even when it is knackered, it is worth money (and more than offered). NCK became TVR Power when Peter Wheeler bought the company.
The studs can be had from the likes of RPI, V8developements, TVR Power, etc. or even ebay.
And the composite gasket will be fine (as it is better then the original and I will use it when it is time for replacement on my standard 350i), but as it is a bit thicker then original the compression ratio goes down. To compensate the heads need to be skimmed if you would like to keep all the power, or live with it as you probably barely notice and can get away way with less octane petrol in the process.

Thanks Rob. Nice to have some facts about the engine, it`s newly renovated and works fine except the oil-leakage!!
