Have a 95 subaru ra, running standard 16 inch wheels, what are the best tyres to\ put on mainly for trackdays, but must be road legal, and will putting 17inch wheels help at all?

17's will give you more options on tyres as it's a more common size these days.

Toyo888's are road legal, and grippy as velcro. They don't last very long, but man do they grip. And they're pretty cheap.

Bridgestone RE tyres have just about the stiffest sidewall going for a road tyre which should be great for track work. They have a dual compound with slightly softer rubber on the edge of the tread which seems to work well if you have some negative camber dialled in on the front end. A friend with an '03 STi PPP has these tyres and rates them highly, though they ain't cheap. An absolute bitch to fit on the rims owing to the stiff sidewalls; should please the fitters

The Toyos are certainly cheaper, possibly a better all rounder for the road but the sidewalls are certainly more squidgy.

Another tyre I rate very highly is the Yokohama Parada Spec 2, which I ran on my CTR. Cheaper than the Bridgestone with a better secondary ride, but the sidewalls are not quite as stiff which is an important factor if doing track work.

I have RE050s on my S2000 and the tyre fitters had to use a specially long iron and two of them putting weight on to it to get the buggers on. I was more worried about the rims!

Great tyre though.

Nah - they were a couple of little chappies that couln't have been more than 9st wringing wet.

Had it been in the UK with your normal fitter- he woldn't have needed the extra leverage.
