Hi Guys and Girls,

I am looking to buy a camera at the mo, but know next to nothing about them... budget is about £250, gonna be using it for general stuff (mainly pics of the family and maybe my car!). Currently looking at a Nikon p5000COOL and a Fuji S9600.

Any comments appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi

I'd head for www.DPReview.com - they have impartial and detailed reviews

loads of mp on small sensors = small photosites so high noise. hence the fuji s6500fd has best ISO performance in its class. image quality was the reason I bought the f31fd for lynne as its slim compact great IQ.

The higher the pixel count doesn't correlated with the better quality of the picture. It's more complex than that. I'm sure someone will explain the techie stuff. *Doh....beaten to it!*

The S9600 is a big heavy camera and, unless Fuji have improved it immensely since the S9500 which came out not long before it, it won't be too hot in low light.

I have just brought the Fuji S9600. Yes its pretty large but it does everything (well nearly) that an SLR does, the only real downside to it is the fact that you can't change lenses. Its light for its size, and well put together. Daytime shots are a breeze.. and night time shots are excellent.. with the ISO cranked up the noise on the end result isn't as bad as some cameras I have seen. The long exposure settings are excellent, even set at ISO 80, pictures are full of light and very sharp; 10x Optical zoom too. Its a 9mpx but you can lower the image quality if you wish or you can save them as RAW files (loss less format).

Id give it 8/10 in respect to its functions. (Lost points due to the non changable lense and lack of face detection (like the cheaper model))

10/10 for functions and value for money.

Sorry for being a bit dim, but what does "lack of face detection" mean? confused

In your budget the Fuji Finepix range give cracking results.

I still use my old S305, it only 3.1 mega pixel but gives cracking results and excellent and realistic colour balance.

Results are a bit noisy in low light however but not bad.
