Was the fuel pump running after it cut out? The pump will only run for a couple of seconds after the engine stops and the noise is often drowned out by the noise of the engine spinning down, but sometimes you can hear it if you are listening for it. Also, if you switch off and on again straight away you should hear the pump run (again, it will stop after a couple of seconds).
If the pump is running I'd suspect an ignition problem. If it isn't, I'd suspect the fuel pump relay.
I'm a little surprised the RAC man didn't investigate further than fuel in the tank, they should be well used to diagnosing this is the sort of thing.

Could be the ECU power supply relay?
Its the one on the end of the 'flying lead' on top of the battery with the black holder, the other one is the fuel pump relay.
That said if the fuel pump is priming then the ECU is getting power, as that relay is switched through the ECU, possibly its not getting a speed signal?
Thats provided by the coil amplifier on the side of the dizzy

Tacho signal goes to ECU for engine spinning (from coil IIRC/revctr IIRC), and road speed from box (trickery box on later cars).
There was a case once of a faulty rev counter defeating the ecu, Clarkys old Griff IIRC ~ which exhibited intermittent cut-outs and then completely failed. Disconnecting rev counter cured the problem.

You really need to start checking you're getting the right signals at the ecu. The Bible can help here, or there's a 14CUX diagnostic manual available on the web somewhere (I can never remember where - I've got a paper copy).
It does sound a bit like your fuel pump being internittent, but it could be other things.
Aside from doing the above, I'd check, clean and possibly replace the 'metal' main and fuel pump relays - the ones loose in the loom above the battery. I'd also check and clean the 40 pin ecu connector. Make the sure the battery is disconnected first.
I live in Chepstow, so if you want to break down near my house, PM me first so we can arrange it!!

Very similar symptoms to a tank breather blockage I had on a different vehicle. It runs then draws off fuel creating a vacuum in the tank. If you leave the vehicle for a while after it's conked out it's fine again. I'd run it till it stops and then quickly release the filler cap. If there's a blocked breather you'll hear air rushing back into the tank.
That's non specific vehicle advice as I don't know the fuelling layout on a Griff... Yet :d

hi, every one manythanks for all your help ,some of the things you have said ,i have donei cleaned every relay on the board checked fuses too cleaned ECU too,i have ordered 2new fuel pump relays should have them tomorrow ,i have changed the 2 fuel relays over and every thing seems fine now someone said to give it a try so i did , i don,t know if it has cured the problem put it has not miss fired or stopped ticking over yet i have fired car up 4 times so far going fine at the moment but i have not been out in car yet i am not the rac mans best friend at the mo. ill put new relays in tomorrow and take it from there like to once more manythanks to everyone outthere for your help some of which i grasp some i don,t being a painter and not a mech, anyways thanks again paul
