Police officer killed in shooting

Shame. But if it's already been estabilshed the Constable was shot first, why do they get the IPCC in?
Presumably because it ist routine
They need to establish how this shooting occur und whether or not this officer had proper back up und protection when he tried to reason und perhaps diffuse a bad situation.. But for the officer... his family .. his colleagues... one can only feel sorrow und condolences for a valuable life lost like that. Und perhaps again .. drink und perhaps other substance fuelled rage ..perhaps another symptom of how our society ist changing for worse into intolerant und angry one which has no self respect, self control und apparently no respect for life.

I think you're right. I suspect it is the first time an armed officer has been shot dead in modern history on the UK mainland.
I believe that Constable Gutteridge of Essex Police was armed when he was shot to death in September 1927 (certainly at the time it was routine for Essex police to be armed). Was Gerry Richardson not armed when he was shot by Freddie Sewell in Blackpool? - Streaky vonhosen said:
For instance it could be alleged that Police had executed the man for killing their colleague.
And the problem with that is....................?
There's a lot to be said for summary execution. The money saved in police, court and prison expenses could be given to the family of the officer concerned where it would be far better used.
No sympathy for the guilty parties in these crimes whatsoever. My thoughts are with the officers friends and family.

No problem in a (probably) clear cut case like this, but it's not impossible that someone would have a lawful excuse for murdering a police officer. Police should never been judge, jury and executioner roled in to one.

Don't you just hate guns!!
No! I hate the people who use them incorrectly, same with knives, which incidentally account for many more deaths and injuries in this country than legally held firearms!
Do you have the same short-sighted view of baseball bats, axes, tyre levers and CARS? If you recall, a policeman was recently killed when his prisoner pulled on the handbrake whilst the Police car was travelling at speed, should we now ban all cars?

All too often there is a knee jerk and hysterical reaction to firearms offences in that the firearm itself is blamed. How about blaming the nutter using the firearm for a change?

It's a bit of a non-argument this...a gun is designed for one thing.

Absolutely! All 13 of mine are designed for shooting clay targets, which I shall be doing both on Saturday at the Club that I run, and on Sunday at the National Shooting Centre along with 20 or so PHers!
Guns do not go off on their own, they need intervention to cause them to fire!

So what you're saying is that you could not shoot anything, e.g a human being, other than a clay pigeon, with your 13 guns?
And before you answer let me tell you I was a member of a gun club for many years.
How many guns do you need?
Do you think guns were invented to shoot at targets or kill humans?
Which is the more likely answer?
Do you think the world would be a better or worse place without guns?
If your answer is the former please explain for I am desperately keen on hearing your arguments.

Do you really think the world would be any different without guns? We are a pretty savage race when you scrape off the thin veneer of civilisation. All weapons can kill, it's what they were designed for and it was us that designed and manufactured them. Get rid of guns and something else will be used to kill. Get rid of that and something else will be used. As a race we tend to find ways of killing with whatever is to hand. Blaming the tool is a little short sighted.

Erm, ever so slightly puerile questions IMO. There are very reasonable answers to all these questions, except the last one which is akin to asking whether the world would be a better place without mankind. Or pork luncheon meat. It wouldn't take long to drift onto the pros and cons of WWII, Hitler, Napoleon, the Wild West, nuclear bombs and a whole host of digression. I think we'll leave that one alone with a very likely consensus that, unless you want to be speaking German, it's a much better place for having guns.
Anyway, what on earth has how many guns does Spiderman own have absolutely any relevance to the tragic death of the PC? The blindingly obvious answer is they all serve different purposes; skeet, trap, Olympic trench, DTL, sporting, FITASC etc all require very different equipment. And that's just the internationally accepted Olympic discipines. Then there's big ones, little one and everything in between to suit the needs of beginners. You question is like asking Tiger Woods why on earth he needs all those bloody golf clubs and surely a seven iron would do.
Also, whilst it's impossible to know what went through the head of the cheif designer at say Browning, but I reckon it's safe to assume clay pigeon guns were designed to shoot clay pigeons. Not people. I would definitely go for the clay pigeon option. No question at all in my mind whatsoever, I'm adamant on this one, clay pigeons it is. In fact clay pigeon guns are really not very good at killing folk at all, unless at very short range. It would be a much safer bet to tip a gallon of four star on your victim and set fire to him.
Have you got any more school debating society questions to raise or do you think you should put a bit of thought into your point before posting? Reading your other posts on this forum, you are far, far, more intelligent than this and I'd say this line of questioning is unworthy of your intellect.

Highland region of Scotland has highest gun ownership per head of population, but lowest level of gun crime....it's not the guns doing the killing by themselves.
Scandinavian countries + Switzerland awash with firearms...very low gun crime.
New York City - complete ban on handguns....high gun crime.
Access to firearms doesn't mean mass killing sprees....except in the 'States, but that's just a scared, insecure society.
