Hi all, I'm in the market for a new satnav. I've got a Garmin Quest at the moment which I've had for years. It's not great however the one good thing it does is allow me to plan a route on the PC first and then upload it - actually it's not at all very good at just getting in the car and saying I want to go to X.

So I need a new one, I really do find planning a route really useful, I'm touring down through Switzerland and Italy later in the year so want to plan the best route. But I also need something that will just get me from A to B easily, and have a speed camera database as well.

So other than the Quest/2 and some of the Garmin StreetPilot products are there any other satnavs that allow me to predefine a route on a PC first, as far as I can see none of the TomTom products have this ability?

Thanks

nubbin.

There is a piece of free software which converts Microsoft Autoroute planned routes to Tom Tom itinerary files. I found it a long time ago - fellow PHer GregE240 pointed it out, but I don't know where it is - try Googling for Autoroute conversion software or something. Or I could e-mail you a copy of the .exe file. You will of course need Autoroute as well , but I'm sure you could find it on a bittorrent file...

TomTom is a very user friendly piece of kit, although Garmin probably has the edge in terms of absolute accuracy and non-road routing (i.e. if you're going for a walk in the hills).

Try THIS and THIS as a starting point....

I have got some software for converting Autoroute AXE files into various different satnav files, I have used it sucessfully several times on my TOMTOM, I'll try and find the link for it, if not PM me and I'll email it to you

Here's the one I use (it's a French site - just look for Telechargements ITNConv 1.62 to download the zip file) http://benichougps.blogspot.com/2005/
