Yesterday I test drove and bought a Sag privately. Owner was a thoroughly decent chap and we were going to swap bankers draft for car tomorrow. However the V5 is not present as it was sent away for the cherished plate to be removed. So heres the dilema - I take the car without the V5 which the DVLA do not like. Or wait a few days, possibily weeks tho and then conclude the deal.

Grateful for any advice legal or otherwise.

Have you done a hpi on it? Personally unless I knew the seller well I'd wait for the V5, a few more days is better than having issues...

Hpi is clear and I could be in the car by 3pm tomorow :-). Problem with cherished plate removal is that the DVLA sometimes want to view the vehicle. Just hope its a matter of days not weeks.

Sagaris is on hold until the P/plate is removed, FRUSTRATION.

Doing 0-60 in 3.7 secs is now in the hands of the DLVA.

Don't want to sound patronising but experience tells me 'patience grasshopper' here. There's tonnes of rogues who appear 'thoroughly decent chaps'. He probably is, but ...

nubbin.

"Marry in haste, repent at leisure" is probably sensible here (since owning a TVR is at least as rewarding and unpredictable as a marriage!). Or possibly "A fool and his money are soon parted". Wait, be patient, get the V5 in your hot little hand before you proceed.

Hi, in my experience the DVLA are pretty quick & don't often inspect newer vehicles. I agree with the other advice about waiting for the new V5 just to be sure.

4 weeks! eek mine was much quicker than that - I dropped the paperwork in at the local office & owned both cars involved in the transfer, so maybe that helped.

I can inform you that the sellers cheque for retention has gone out his account. So the docs surely cant be long in coming. Sag by weekend?

The V5 actually only shows the registered keeper of the car anyway, they may not be the legal owner and the V5 is no proof of ownership. Traders buy cars all the time at auctions without V5's, I have myself, it is no biggie! I have also sold cars without a V5 for the same reason - private plate transfer.

I am not suggesting that you buy it without seeing the V5 or a copy of it but just saying the V5 is not the be all and end all. Good Luck with the purchase.

Remember when you were going to buy my Tam?

The DVLA asked to inspect the car, which apparently happens to about 1 in 10 when plates are moved on/off cars. It delayed the process by about 6 weeks!

Have had a cherished transfer take 6 weeks before getting the V5 back in the past.

This actually happened when I was selling the Aston. I took colour photocopies of the V5, along with applications for the cherished plate retention, etc. and gave those to the new owner, along with a long receipt that I worded and signed. New owner was relatively happy with that - but I am an honest chappy, the car was a bargain, and I could very easily prove I work for a particularly large bank and would be very, very unemployed quite quickly if I screwed around on something like that.

Can I ask you or anyone else for that matter. How long after your cheque clears for the retention have you been waiting to get the v5 back? I ask this because the sellers cheque cleared on Wednesday. Thanks in advance.

checked & for the last two I transferred recently, the V5's were received in 11 days and 12 days from chq clearing although the DVLA paperwork said to allow 4-8 weeks.

I was going to make this point myself, bill of sale is the real proof of purchase.

The person who has done the transfer & presented the documents will have been issued with a receipt which should show date they expect transfer completed,if you can see this paperwork then there will be no problem.
All local offices now have control of issuing the new V5, it shoulden`t take more than 2 weeks.
There is a dedicated section @ DVLA which are very helpfull, all you have to do is phone them with all details of transfer & they will confirm when V5 is going to be released.

Dont buy anything till you get all details confirmed by DVLA.
