996 Fuel Grade
Discussion
Not wanting to sound like the typical tight fisted Scot BUT what fuel do 996's run on? Are they Super Unleaded or is this just for the turbo - I am just trying to squeeze my last penny into financing/budgetting the best 996 that i can afford. The Turbo is on my Radar but conflicting running costs compared to a standard C2 or even 04 997 makes me doubt it as a viable option for everyday motoring as that is my plan.
For optimum use, they say use 98 RON (Optimax, or Tesco 99), however you can run them on normal unleaded, the ECU actually will retard the timing so it runs fine on standard unleaded (95 RON).
However, you will get less performance, and its hard to say whether you will get any cost benifit, as your MPG may suffer when running 95. Its hard to say, but the short answer is yes, you can run the 996 on 95 with no ill effects other than losing a few horses here and there.

Thanks again Fidg, always full of advice!! Looks like i have no excuses left for not getting one.
P.S 2004 997 C2 or a 2002 996 Turbo? Funds are ready to go as of tommorow.

I dont know about running the turbo on 95 - probably best not to (but again, check the manual).
Out of the two, the Turbo will depreciate less, and allegedly has the stronger engine block (for greater reliability), but of course, theres nowhere to upgrade to after the turbo.
I guess the key questions are boot space requirements, performance requirements etc..

Anyone tried BP 102 ? Its now available down the road from me so very tempted, just a tankfull to see what its like, as at that price its way too expensive !
Will the ECU do the opposit of running it on 95RON, ie adapt the other way to get the most from 102RON ??

I very much doubt it.
The ECU can probably adapt up to about 100RON (I'm pretty sure thats available from the pumps in Germany as standard), but 102RON is effectively racing fuel, and from my understanding BP have aimed it at track day type applications, I dont think you'd get a huge amount of benifit for day to day usage, plus at 2 quid a litre, it certainly wont be worth it for everyday driving.
