996 GT2 vs 997 GT3RS vs Race spec 996 GT3
Discussion
1st car is the Revo Race spec GT3, running carbon body parts, race spec Moton suspension, centre lock cup wheels and a 440bhp motor.
2nd car is the "2007 Trackday car of the year" the super fast 997 GT3RS (mapped)
3rd car is the lardy, widowmaking, only quick on the straights 996 GT2
Pictures are at the 19km marker of the "famous" Nordschleife Racing circuit, as the GT2 gobbles them up
My passenger timed the BTG lap at 8.10 including taking traffic.. some of which you can see in the pics.
In truth we all know each other well, so I said I would follow them around and promise not to overtake, we did the 8.10 lap, although I had to weave the car a few times to keep the heat in the tyres.

I know your taking the piss but - I learnt this on bikes the best way to get heat into the tyres whilst on track is braking hard and accelerating hard its a misconception that road track cars will get a sufficient amount of heat into their tyres by weaving in actual fact you'll probably pick up all the the crap and marbles that lie off the racing line...

Friend of mine does regular sub 8 mins btg.... i was in car when he did a 7.49 in a mk1 gt3.
That'd be Dave321, then. I've sat in with him at the 'Ring, and he's very smooth and quick, and very handy in his GT3. I don't doubt that he managed a 7.49 B2G at all. As for the OP, no doubt a sorted GT2 is a monster, but up against the two cars you mentioned, it's all so down to the driver that there isn't much definitive in your implied position that a GT2 is quicker around the 'Ring than either of the other two cars. Your GT2 might well be - and not having a dig btw, 8.10 is more than respectable in traffic.

Thanks Kurgen, good pics, looks like the weather was kind to you, too.
Now for the $1M question that GT2/GT3RS owners will be asking, "Do you think that YOU and the car have a sub 8:00 minute lap in you?"

I could lap a sub 8, my passenger was timing more to see what the 2 GT3s were capable of.
There are 3 factors though in doing a sub 8 in a road car at the Ring.
1) As you can see in the pics, no crash helmet.. not a place to crash esp hitting the compression in the foxhole at 160+ in a GT2.
2) Traffic.. some of the closing speeds are unbelievable, I've overtaken cars at Flugplatz at +100mph above their speed. Also bikes are much slower in the corners.
3) Still hungover from the heavy beer session, night before.

Hmmm ... I seem to be missing somthing here ... while I'm not doubting the times various of you are quoting for the Nordschleife I'm having trouble squaring it with this:
Walter Rohrl has been reported as doing 7m 50s round the Nordschleife in a 996 GT3 - and 7 seconds quicker in an RS. Being an offical test driver for Porsche he probably didn't have traffic to contend with either. I've seen him in action on several occasions in Quattros and observed how hard it was for experienced competitors to get anywhere near his times.
So ... was the circuit longer/slower then? Is the BTG lap considerably shorter than a full one?

because you can't do the full lap on touristenfahren days people time from the bridge just after you start to the gantry part-way down the straight towards the finish. I think BTG times are generally accepted to be about 25 seconds slower than a full lap (depending how fast the car is as the missed section (GTB
) is straight) Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
