Thought I'd post a few pics from Silverstone on Saturday. Out for the second time with the new Sigma 120-300 and a monopod. Really struggling to get used to the new kit. The lens is quite difficult to get focused precisely where I want it especially when used with the 1.4 TC. My biggest problem was trying to pan with a monopod. I usually hand hold, but the lens is too big and heavy now so I'm having to use it. I just don't seem to get a smooth rythm, and the cars never seem to track truly horizontally which you can cater for hand holding, but I'm finding it more difficult with the monopod. I guess it's just down to practice.
Anyway carpet bombing as I did I managed to get a few that I was pleased with. I tried for once to get around most of the track and get different shots this time. Anyway comments and critisim always welcome.

They look fine to me.
I was having the same difficulties with the 300 on a monopod. I got a ball-head, and left it loose, so the camera could move around on the monopod in any direction, left-right, up-down.
So I use the monopod to take the weight of the camera and lens (and therefore stopping the up down movement), and move the camera around on the ball, letting me angle it if I want, and track a car much more easily. It works for me, and I'm sure its not what you're supposed to use the monpod for. To help balance, my left hand rests under the end of the lens, so I can make small adjustments.
Maybe worth a try.

Oi! Those are my pics!
Very nice though...all of them!
Seriously...looks like we were in largely the same spots, only 24hrs apart. Must get mine sorted ASAP, just so busy at the moment.
Am a little miffed as what would have been a brilliant rear-on shot of the blue-and-yellow 'vette with it's bonnet vertical (exit of Club) is just a little blurry, as I was taking panning shots at 1/125 just before it happened!

So as this is the FIA GT thread, who was in the pits on Saturday? a Canon 300/400/something mm L prime over one shoulder with a pistonheads
sticker around it, and a 70-200, iirc, in the other hand.

That was me....you should have come and said hello, or just shouted PistonHeads
Got some cracking shots with the new 300mm, just going through them now.

I was trying to decide if I should or not. I was in a dark blue polo shirt and jeans, walked past you admiring the pistonheads sticker haha

Hi there,
I have recently started using a new technique when trying to shoot panning shots.
I attach my monopod to the camera but leave the monopod un-extended and tuck the base of the monopod into the top of my jeans. I have tried using an extended monopod touching the floor but struggled when the cars were not moving truly horizontal. This new technique has really helped with the problem I used to have which was vertical movement when panning. It does get some strange views from people but when I see the results I don't mind looking like a tw*t.
Here are some of mine from the weekend.

Not speaking from my own experience as i have no where near the level of
skill that i admire on here.
But on the panning question. Saw a guy once with a development of what was
mentioned earlier. He had what looked to me like one of those leather pouches
people use to hold banners or flags when walking in parades. He had the mono
pod slotted into that which seemed to take care of the weight and stability
but still gave him complete freedom of movement.
