Just had my arse handed back to me, in a manner of speaking, by a monster Merc SL. I know there are a few tasty ones of these around so was far from blasé to start with, but his attitude on my tail indicated he was up for a play so I thought I might oblige. Sure enough I spotted an overtake chance and gave it some beans (single lane of A4) and the guy followed suit and was right on my chuff. Another dawdle and then another chance, this time I dropped it down to second and gave it the full monty, banged into third making fairly rapid progress. Now you normally get the first pounce advantage, sneaking a lead during the reaction time by which time you are well into the Cerbs stride anway, but this guy was right on me almost immediately and I am sure given a dual carriageway and more open roads would have toasted me.

I slowed approaching a roundabout and pulled into the right hand lane, he came up the inside gave a wave and a smile (and got one back) - but I had to see the badge to see what he had, thankfully my honour was somewhat saved when it wasn't just a middle range jobbie but the big boy SL65AMG. A quick google and it throws up 600hp and 740lb ft or thereabouts.. Heavy car or not, I have no real problem with taking a spanking given those sort of figures

Anyway contrary to the usual "Cerbs can't be beaten comments" I thought it might be worth a list to see what car's people have actually been given given a hard time by.... forewarned is forearmed and all that. hehe

A very nice looking Evo 500FQ surprised me with it's acceleration, it seemed very quick indeed!

Old style scooby turbo. No way was it standard though as it just about kept with me to 120. Judging by the look of it, it had had some serious work done.

996 Turbo on country roads. The guy was a nutter though overtaking on blind bends, so gave up rather than kill the sleeping wife next to me

2 of note for me......

A year or so back, I pulled out the way for an Audi RS6 Plus which was trying to push me to do silly things in rush hour traffic and then a month or so back a (hopefully) tuned 993 Turbo which stuck to my bumper up to 1.35 leptons at which point the speed restrictor sitting in the passenger seat decided to cut in. He cruised slowly past with a cheery wave.

Remember, a Cerb wont really do its thing until you are over 100 (on a private test track )

Exige S up to about 80. Nothing in it, although he had the jump on me.
Coincidentally, TCS can expect a call from me re short induction + remap shortly..

had an sl55 AMG for a bit, and the new slk 55AMG as well. They are awesome cars! Loved them to cruise and on the motorway. Roof down, airscarf on and an engine note like a ww2 fighter was heaven. Got almost as much attention as the Cerbie in both of them andd loved them to bits. Prefer the Cerbie though as it has just so much personality whereas if you try doing anything fun in the Merc the TC comes on no matter how often you turn it off, the dash lights up like a Christmas tree and runins your fun. Unless you are on gravel in a car park in surrey in which case it gets very confused and much fun can be had!

I got blitzed by a fiesta a few weeks back. Standard 1.1 fiesta with no mods at all. But to be fair, my engine had just eaten itself!

Gave a funky Caterham superlight type thingy the fright of its life on Sunday near Lyddon in Kent. Cerb came into its own around the national speed limit level ;-)

Had a play with one of them a few weeks back. He was all over on the roundabouts and up to about 50/60 then he just faded away. Caught me again at the next roundabout etc etc

The mega-Mercs - i.e. the BiTurbo V12s, in whatever body shape SL, CL or S. Some of them are chipped to make even more power. Not happened on the latest 6.3 NA AMG engine yet but the old blown 5.5 (SL55 etc) was never a trouble.

I'm wary of modified high-end Porsches but the only one to have had the firepower to outdrag the 4.5 was the black 996 Turbo in my YouTube video - but then it dyno'ed at 650bhp and, having since been in it, I doubt there's much it wouldn't outdrag. The traction control was kicking in, in the dry, in the first 4 gears - and it's a 4WD car!

Diesel A8 V8s that have been chipped are also worth watching for (may be what you chanced on Ancol). They have colossal torque - ditto chipped V10 diesel Phaetons/Touraegs.

I had the chance of having a good drive last year of a CL65 AMG.and what a totally awesome, awsome, car.I have no doubt that a Cerb no matter how good it was, would not be able to get near one of these. At the time i remember posting how it was in this forum. On a straight road i planted my foot in to the carpet and f**k me it was in warp drive.I was planted in to the seat, with all sense of me losing my hearing.A bit like being on a plane.I was on the 155mph limiter in only what seemed like seconds.A really, really impressive car.

I would like to have a shot in one of the mega Mercs that's for sure, wonder if you can get a play in one at that MB World place at Brooklands scratchchin

Don't really follow the Vmax stuff too much but also believe there is an SL that attends (maybe a little tweaked admittedly) that fair demolishes most of the other things that attend.

how many of the above instanes involved you chaps bouncing off the rev limiter? I'd put money on the chances that your cerbs weren't but what was tryin' to compete sure was.

the only times i find things difficult is when racing against Griff4.0 on very narrow twisities, sure i can easily pass on the straights but keeping everything in line when squirting into the bends is very demanding. That said Griff4.0 is a decent pilot and someone who I feel confident with when hooning. (all on a track or private french estate roads...naturaly)

I think you can be a passenger in one.Mate of mine is a Merc nut.Having owned 7 in the last two years alone. He went down there a week after we done the MB dawn raid and was most impressed.About £25 a go if i remember rightly.

TBH I have no idea if I did or not, I did have a momentary glance down and the needle was just bouncing back and forward from nothing to max, bit like a metronome hehe admittedly I don't think I did hit the limiter (didn't feel a stutter or anything, just think the dial was having a paddy) but given no guage I wasn't about to hang the engine out any longer than felt comfortable. I do think the 63AMG's are just balistic missiles and even if I was changing up at 6k instead of 7k I don't think I would have made a sod of difference this morning, that torque figure still makes me chuckle.

Except I think you will find Cerbs don't have rev limiters, I think the MIL light flashes at max rpm and the buzzer sounds, thought there is even some debate about that!

I can confirm anything short of a 65 in unmodified form (63 included) falls short of the mark. Again, same speed trials... tbh, not much beats a Cerb unless either heavily modified or err an F430/F40/F50 - although we did match the first two F cars times, the terminals were a little higher for them both. NEVER underestimate a Cerbera. hehe

CL/SL/S 65's are absolutely mighty though, as can be modified SL600's and such.
FWIW at the speed trials a CL65 ran 12.26, an SLR with the same driver the following year ran 12.25 eek nuts
