No jokes and no offenece intended to the female Pistonheaders BUT i am seriously now looking at a TT as an option but i am not sure if my wife could safely drive it in the wet or maybe even in the dry - she has a clean liscence and has never been in an accident and seemed to be able to handle the Elise ok but after viewing Fifth Gear re-runs and various other TT stuff on Youtube - The car does seem a bit............scary.

Basically can it be driven like your everday BMW,Mercedes around town and down to the shops if need be especially in the wet?? That 420Bhp seems scary compared to my Elise's 118bhp and the SLKs 190 Bhp. Note that the TT would be a 2nd car in the household. A friend of ours wife drives a 997 s and she has had no problems with it whatsover over the winter months.

There is probably no easier supercar to drive IMO with the added safety of 4WD and PSM.

Take her for a test drive and i'm positive your wife will be hooked. A car is only as fast as the driver wants to go.

Mine has driven mine a few times now, no problem at all , in comparison to the csl which she was scared of !

It will only go as fast as they press the accelarator .

I posted the same question before I bought my own.

I have let the wife drive the car on many occassions.
It is really easy to drive and only goes quick if you cause the turbos to spool up, which you do not really have to. As long as she can modulate her right foot then she will be fine.

I made sure I took her on a very straight wide bit of road though and told her to floor it so that at least she knew what it could do, so as not to scare her if she did it unawares. She said it was too scary and would not be doing that again. Fine by me and mission accomplished

About 6-7 years ago I was a student and had a summer job selling Imported Jap Sports cars, where my dad also worked at the time. We took a 750bhp R33 GTR Skyline in part-ex which my Dad used for a few days to have a play with. One weekend there were no other cars at home and my mum took it to town to do the shopping in, which I found out by spotting her coming the other way coming back from town. She was oblivious that she was in anything REALLY quick, as she only used the first inch of throttle, so what happened when you pressed it to the floor was immaterial to her.

My suspicion is that anyone can drive a modern 4wd turbo Porsche. And it'll only go wrong if they try to drive beyond where their abilities and the conditions allow. Presumably your misses keeps within those parameters in the other cars she uses, so I'd see no problem with a 997 TT.

yes These cars are incredibly quick, but also have huge brakes. So if you are driving within the speed limits of the road it could be argued that they are a very safe car.

There's absolutely no way your missus should be driving one of these.....!
For God's sake man, buy her a Cayenne - like all the other mum's - and keep the Turbo for yourself....

My wife has been driving my without any problem, she likes the speed!!. Having said that, If your wife is a confident driver then she will have no problems. You can drive the 996TT within normal roads speeds all day long, it will behave itself. Plus with PCM & 4WD to give you that extra safety.

The only problem you will have is keeping her off it!!...

i agree with most of what has been said

i have run three porsches and all have been simple to drive and benign in all circumstances other than when you push the loud pedal

that is the whole point. these cars are just as capable of poodling to tescos as they are running at 160mph

there is no reason why she (and by extension you) should be worried

honestly the only car that my gran can drive down a empty country lane and
lose me in any other car is the TT. Fantastic cars, why dont you let her drive one
and then she'll be smitten.

rolleyes I'm new to the whole Porsche thing so don't want to get myself off to a bad start or offend anyone but what a pathetic post! Are you sure you could handle a 996 TT yourself??

I've just brought myself a 1977 (1978 model) 911 SC targa somehow i'd say that is a lot "harder" to drive than a modern 996!

On a positive note, good car choice.
