OK i hate to bang on about colour - BUT

....I'm going to look at a low milage '02 targa in Rainforest green
comparable specced cars in Black/Silver/Grey seem to be a good £5k more.
would i be overly optomistic to predict a swing towards green cars in the next couple of years? (or at least by the time I come to sell) (in the same way that white has come back in the last few years)
or am i buying a 'lime' in terms of resale value?
Are metallic green porkers that hard to shift? I must admit I kind of like them...
any opinions and experiences most welcome -
any "just buy the car and drive it" responses not so welcome
Cheers,
BERGS

IMHO its a fantastic colour which looks great on the 911. Have you seen the GT2 at Paragon in RFG, just beautiful. That said I think we would be in a minority and yes I think it would be a difficult one to sell. The key is what you pay. You need to get it a little cheaper than average to be able to sell it in the same way, people forget the color a little if the price is right.
Any one for a purple 928 by the way (see the classifieds) ? great car but the colour limits the number of customers.
Also selling my 02 Targa in Lapis blue if you are interested

So it's already £5k cheaper than comparable cars in other colours....As you can't enjoy the car for Porsches sake, why not hedge with oil futures or even stock market indices using that £5k differential,,,anything could happen to this investment, but both have more chance of paying out than dark green Porsches being a must have over the next few years...unless of course Ferry Porsche were to decide he needed a secondhand 996 targa in the uk?

Hi David - yep thats pretty much what I figured - but in a way, the fact your low miler 928 is not sold is to me a bit of a warning in itself on the dangers of 'marmite' colours....
I thought you had a guy buying for his collection or similar? - did that fall through?

Just an opinion ...
If I had the choice between my 2001 C2 car in black and in RFG:
If it was 2k less, the black would have won easily.
if it was 3k less, the black would have still won though with a bit more thought.
if it was 4k less, it would have started to become quite a hard choice.
if it was 5k less, the RFG would have started to look like a very good buy.
if it was 6k less, I think i'd be driving around in RFG and still very much enjoying driving a 911!
At 5k-6k it's reasonable percentage of the price. I do like RFG on some cars, the 911 isn't on that list though.

He was a trader and I think he saw a possible spread due to the low milage and also fancied driving it himself for a bit. I put off a couple of other buyers and took the day off work as he said he definately wanted the car (was even trying to arrange funds transfer). He came and for the first time ever the whole of the digital dash failed when we started the car which kind of (understandably)put him off. I said I'd call him when I fixed it (half and hour and a replacement fuse later all was well) but I'd kinda lost enthusiasm so I never called him or the other buyers back. Think I better get off my bum and try a little harder to sell it now but still not much enthusiaism for sifting through the numerous enquires for the ,few, serious buyers. I'm Looking to sell, the 928 and 996 Targa and get into a TT but think i may just pop down and see if the indies are interested.
p.s. Saw a lovely RFG turbo and that would be high on my list, at the right price of course

I have nothing against green cars per se but RFG is a bit bright rather than bottle green. I feel the same about Lapis vs Midnight. Saying all this I had a 996 in Ocean with Savannah and really liked the Savannah (and had no problem with resale) so what do I know
£5k is a big enough differental and probably accurately reflects the trade's view of the colour...

isnt lapis the replacement for ocean ? I thought they were pretty much the same, and agree that the Savannah kind of works with the blue
I`m not sure the car being in Rainforest green is a reason for it to be 5k cheaper than all the others. Just make sure there isn't something more sinister accounting for the difference in price. Not aimed at this car specifically as I don't know which car it is just a general observation.

I really, really don't get this thing about RFG.
My Boxster S was in this colour on sports classic wheels and it looked the dog's danglies IMO. It is a really good, subtle colour that is so much more interesting than lapis or metropole blue. It's not like its Rubystone is it?
A 5k difference is a total no brainer and you're driving the car, not the colour!
I suspect that any potential losses wil be minimized if you sell privately as i did. You will always find a likeminded individual who likes the colour enough to buy. A trader will of course use the colour as an excuse to kick the price down a few k.

I looked at a C4S in RFG; thought the colour really suited the car. I haggled a little too hard on the price (it had been on offer at the local OPC for nearly a year and I was doing my best to convince them that no-one but me would be crazy enough to buy a green Porker) and someone swooped in and bought it. I drive past it every day and think it looks beautiful, but I think the fact that it was for sale for nearly a year might be a factor to bear in mind...

I think it is a fine colour and I don't even play golf or wear checked trousers. As most have said each to their own and most Porsche owners eerrr on the side of caution and resale values being savvy types. By the time you come to sell it all 996's would have fallen in value to incorporate more buyers who may fall into the 'unconventional' Porker purchasers. i.e. at £25k in a few years more people will like RFG.

To be fair henry - its £32k at a dealer in the north
given that you just sold a similar spec C2 (albeit at bug price) '03 for £30k on some (relatively) lengthy miles - it's not that far from the market...there are a few private face lifts for £30k ish
and it is green.
will be getting it checked if i do go ahead though.
Thanks for all the advice thus far

If you like the "less popular" colours, then you might want to know about this one I just bid on - 0202 facelift targa manual in guards red with grey leather, Sat Nav, 18s etc, done just 40k with recent service & tyres. Have yet to find if I've bought it but will be able to sell it for less than £32k. Let me know if it's of interest.

That green one does look good in the pics doesnt it. I would have thought £32K from a dealer already includes a couple of grand discount on the standard dealer price (maybe due to colour). I would expect good condion facelift targa's with average milage to be retailing at £34 to £36K with dealer bids around £30k from indies and tuppence ha'penny from OPC's. Is that about right Henry ?
