Driving down the A45 yesterday we saw a police outrider followed by a police van followed by three very frightening looking military trucks, with fans and vents and strange things on them.

These were followed by a military fire engine (a proper Dennis - not a green Goddess), followed by (get this), an ambulance, followed by another police van, and then a final outrider.

Question is: What was in the trucks?

Where's the A45? Anywhere near AWRE Aldermaston?

Anyhow, don't forget that nuclear weapons need to be serviced at regular intervals - they're moved around the country in road convoys ...

Sounds like a convoy escorting components for nuclear warheads. I have escorted similar from Aldermaston years ago up to Harwell. It is not an unusual occurance. Normally the escort is fully armed and two of the rtucks are likley to be decoys which are empty.

I may be completely wrong though.

Marmite

Prescotts lunch

both may have some credence

Why don't they just put them in white vans and avoid the fuss....? It was a pretty obvious target.

By the way the portion of the A45 was in Northampton. At least I think that was where I was when I passed the convoy. My vision had become blurred and my wife was glowing.

Sometimes see LHD GMC box bodied trucks with vents etc. in Lincs. As nightowl says the ones I've seen are NBC ambulances and containment vehicles probably doing disaster scenarios (which doesn't really bear thinking about.)Oddly I found a .gov website with details, I'll see if i can track it down again.
madcop, aren't the warhead wagons usually moved by fairly low key convoys ?

Very similar convoy on the A1 Western Bypass Newcastle on Sunday afternoon. Police stopping traffic at junctions and stopping overtakers of the Convoy also. turned left (west) up the A69. took it to be Cruise Missiles off to store at Albemarle. Suspicious, me, never. Course they could have nuclear cos rumour had it they stored them up there to.

I can't tell you what they are moved in because no body seems to know (or no one would ever tell us what was in the wagons, all they would say is " Have you got your lead underpants on today?").

All I can tell you is that when I have been involved in this sort of escort, anyone trying to ambush the convoy unless it was in an A10 Tankbuster would surely lose. The fire power in the escorting transit passenger vehicles and Range Rovers is awesome stuff.

To protect the cargo in these convoys in a covert way with such resources would be impossible. So why bother trying to do it covertly?

Marmites disgusting, but a hungry prescott could be a down right disaster.

How would this differ from a non-hungry Prescott?

Lets face it, Prescotts pretty much as disgusting as marmite, whether or not he's hungry!
