west london porsche dented my manual 987 boxster s whilst it was in for a service. after a lot of moaning, this afternoon they kindly gave me a courtesy car - a 997 911 c4s cabriolet. good i thought, i'll look forward to this for a couple of weeks.

BUT, it's tiptronic....and it feels crap. i drove my boxster around france and italy last month and it was fantastic. but this gorgeous c4s just doesn't feel right. am i doing something wrong, or is this as good as tiptronic gets??

i know the tiptronic / manual stuff has been done to death, but this is my first experience of actually driving one, which is the only way you can make an opinion about it.

so, i seek only to know which is the best mode to drive it in??

With it parked on the kerb whilst you admire it from your taxi, probably. A ton of people will follow me now to advise that you feather the throttle and that you try a few 'blips' on the downchanges, maybe that you take the time to practice the nuances of left-foot braking and that the car's gearbox will take a little while to adapt to your driving style in any event. Apparently it's quite a handful getting the best out of one of these Tips, and to be honest, when it's that much work to cajole a decent performance out of one, a manual starts to look like the easy way out. Ultimately - this thing is not going to float your boat. Just hope they get your car fixed quickly, and in the meantime, the best you can do is have a bit of a play with the steering wheel buttons. They're just like the ones in F1 you know... etc etc

I tried everything not to make my Tip not drive like a piece of shit, and nothing really worked - so a simple answer to your question is probably "Yes - Tip is that crap." Perhaps key to its current level of crapness, given that you haven't had your loaner long, is that it'll take the adaptive programming a bit to get used to your style of driving. It won't make much of a difference, because the system is easily fooled and confused - but it might help a tiny bit.

ETA - :heh: I certainly killed this thread, then. My Anti-Tip Ninja Powers are obviously now unassailable. I get a lot of practice, it has to be said. And don't bother posting *yawn* smileys, given that as a Ninja, I am beyond such things and therefore your taunting smileys will have no effect.
